That’s our choice for DS, but all our UK friends (DH and I live in London but are not British) seem to be a bit meh about this name. Is there anything wrong with it or any associations we might not be aware of?

It’s a nice name. I’m personally not a huge fan of the nn Jules (it sounds a bit feminine to me), but other than that it’s a great name.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 23/11/2024 15:20

I like it, I've recently been reading the famous five with DS and thought that it was a nice but under used name. It also depends where he will grow up, on the working class estate I grew up in his life would've been hell, standard white collar, middle class environment no one will bat an eye

Berlinlover · 23/11/2024 15:46

I have a cousin called Julian who’s in his early 40s. I’ve never been a fan of the name to be honest.

Evasmissingletter · 23/11/2024 15:49

Love it. Some one at work has named their baby Julian.

CustardCreams2 · 23/11/2024 15:51

A bit wet.

BoleynMemories13 · 23/11/2024 15:59

Are you Eastern European by any chance? The only young Julians I know have Eastern European heritage.

There's nothing 'wrong' with it as such, it's just quite a dated trend (currently) in Britain.

I lump it with the likes of Timothy, Philip, Adrian, Brian etc. They're generally not names British families are currently opting for, but there's no reason why you shouldn't use it if you want to. Names in British classrooms in the 2020s reflect all sorts of cultures so nobody will bat an eyelid at a young Julian.

Firsttimebabymummy · 23/11/2024 16:50

I like it!

pinkdelight · 23/11/2024 16:51

It'll always be posh sounding to me. Whether that's a good thing for you or not, I dunno. I'm not keen but it could be a lot worse.

MouldyCandy · 23/11/2024 17:06

It just reminds me of King Julien from Madagascar. "physically fit... physically fit..."

SnappyOwl · 23/11/2024 17:08

I went to school with a Julian - he’d be early forties by now. He’s the only one I’ve ever met, he was lovely so I think it’s a nice name by association.

hiddenselkie · 23/11/2024 17:12

I really like Julian

StrawberryTriflng · 23/11/2024 17:14

The Julian I know is confident and successful so I’d be happy to use the name.

AyrshireTryer · 23/11/2024 17:19

My name's Julian and this is my friend Sandy.

Crazykefir · 23/11/2024 17:23

Look up Julian Clary he is brilliant.

TheOGCCL · 23/11/2024 17:25

It always sounds like Julie-Anne to me.

AyrshireTryer · 23/11/2024 17:55

So the only famous Julians we can think of are both gay.
Not a problem to me, but how would that go down on the first day of secondary school. May as well put a target on the kid's back.

KirstenBlest · 23/11/2024 18:04

I don't like it at all. I know 4. None are posh. One is gay. The other 3 are Jules or similar diminutives.
I'd put the name in the same bracket as Nigel and Roger. (Nigel and Roger are OK names but haven't been popular for about 60 years)

Timothy and Philip are classics and due a comeback. Adrian is too close to 'a drain' for my taste.

SuperGinger · 23/11/2024 18:12

Great name, known a few, none were wet.

bellocchild · 23/11/2024 18:20

It's a name for a grown-up rather than a child. Needs a nickname?

mum1345 · 23/11/2024 18:50

My dad (in his fifties) has this name and he has always really hated it!

BootballJoy · 23/11/2024 22:22

I've always classed it along with Barnaby, Jeremy, Guy, Miles, Crispin, Alistair (and previously Toby, Oliver, Elliot, Rupert, Sebastian but these are popular now so they have a different image) as slightly posh, likely to sing in a choir.

And not as nice sounding as the wonderful Felix and Tristan, which are arguably in the same kind of group.

Nothing exactly wrong with it I'm just not a fan.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 23/11/2024 23:11

As well as having a similar sound to much more popular for girls Julia (so some might consider Julian also sounds quite feminine), Julian is also is currently seen as being more likely to be a (posh) middle aged man’s name in the UK. However names like Rupert, Hugo, Sebastian etc used to be considered that way too and they are now Top 100, so it wouldn’t surprise if more young Julian’s were around in the future (I do know a toddler one, brother to Sebastian).

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 23/11/2024 23:13

I like it.

VeryQuaintIrene · 23/11/2024 23:18

I like it a lot. Mind you, I like Julian for a girl, too, though (as in the medieval mystic) so maybe my opinion isn't helpful...

Marcipex · 23/11/2024 23:20

One thing that puts me off it is that it’s two girls names put together. Julie Anne.

The other thing is that the only one I know is a lying cheating slimeball.
