Hiya

Does anyone know of any alternative way to spell the name Eirwyn (pronounced kind of like Air-win)?

Erwin is similar but more like Air-vin I think.

Love the sound of the name but think he’d spend his life telling people how to spell and say it!

Thanks!

Erwin is pronounced as it’s spelled - Er-win. Would that be close enough?

Are you in Wales OP? It's not that common these days but I'd say most Welsh people would know an older man called Eirwyn and know how to pronounce it or make an attempt (Welsh being phonetic and all that).
If you are anywhere else all bets are off.

Eurwyn? Meaning is different but they sound fairly similar.
They are 90-yr olds' names and not currently trendy.
Neither of the names sound like Erwin.

We've got an Aneurin in meithrin which I think is great

GogLais · 20/11/2024 19:36

Aneurin is better but the A-nye-rin (mis)pronunciation doesn't sound good to me. It's a bit of a grandad name, and I'd think the baby was named after Nye Bevan.

He's 3.

I know an Urwin

I had a lovely colleague called Eirwen (Ire-wen). If you want Airwen, perhaps it's better to spell it that way. It's tricky choosing a well known name in one area/language when you're living elsewhere. My DD's name is well known across the planet but each country pronounces it differently (think of the range of Catherine) and she finds it difficult that my relatives in another country pronounce it in their accent.

@LadyMonicaBaddingham , I gathered from the post that he was younger than 5. It seems a grandad name to me because the ones I know are about 80.

GogLais · 20/11/2024 20:24

Eirwyn is something like Eyr-win.
If you want a -wyn name you could use Edwin, Elwyn, Alwyn or Oswin, which would probably be easier.

I would pronounce it as air-vin but that’s based on the Dutch pronunciation as that is where I am familiar with the name
