Are these too similar.

My cousin’s DS is Frank after our grandfather, I am currently pregnant with DS2 and want to honour our grandfather and use the name Franklin.

As parents we would not shorten to Frank however I know we cannot predict nicknames at schools although the children will attend different schools.

do I need to seek approval from my cousin? My DH thinks not as they are different names however I do not want to cause any rifts

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

How big is the family, and how often will they see each other?

DH has scores of cousins, I doubt he could name half of them, never mind their DC. There may well be second cousins out there with the same names as our DC but who knows.

I only have two cousins, only one of whom has DC. Choosing a name the same as her DC would be as weird as choosing the same name as a sibling, even though we don't see each other often.

I have 6 cousins. My cousins all have at least 2 children, 1 has 4 so fairly big family.

I think they're too similar. Maybe use it as a middle name.

TeenLifeMum · 16/11/2024 11:47

That’s too similar imo. Choose something else rather than putting them in the awkward position by asking them.

sel2223 · 16/11/2024 12:15

Too similar for me personally. I'd choose it as a middle name

There have been a few similar threads.

Some of my cousins have used the same names as other cousins. It's not an issue.

SquigglePigs · 16/11/2024 13:56

They are very similar. If you see your cousin and her kid very regularly (monthly or more) then I wouldn't use it. If you see them less rarely then go for it.

DH's cousin gave her new baby the exact same name as our then 3 yr old DD. We see them 2-3 times a year max. We just thought it was lovely! We've gone with slightly different abbreviations, which does help when we're together.

Pieceofpurplesky · 16/11/2024 14:04

Do they have the same surname? Will they be at the same primary? They are the only issues ...

Two Frank(lin) Smiths in a class would be a pain. Other than that, fine.

Lots of Greek families have similar names due to naming customs lots of cousins Alexandra/Alexi Etc

Tavener589 · 16/11/2024 14:45

@Pieceofpurplesky different surenames and schools 30 minutes apart

It's fine. No one has a claim on family honour names.

Firsttimebabymummy · 16/11/2024 16:17

I'd say it's fine. It would make a difference imo if you see them a few times a year vs every week.

Yes agreed!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 16/11/2024 19:51

You have the same Grandad, so imo it wouldn’t be weird to want to use the same name (Frank) - particularly as the boys would only be second cousins and have a different surname to boot. Imo it’s actually weirder to use Franklin - as unless that was your Grandads actual name, to me that’s not really honouring them, you just happen to like the name Franklin 😀

Is your Grandad still alive? Maybe consider using Frank as a middle name in his honour (that way he wouldn’t have two Great-grandchildren with very similar first names) and go back to the drawing board for first names. Franklin is a surname so similar style might be Bennett, Sullivan, Heath, Flynn, Devlin, Fraser etc.

WaltzingWaters · 16/11/2024 20:13

For siblings, way too similar. For cousins, absolutely fine I’d say.

GreatTheCat · 16/11/2024 20:51

I have cousins with the same name as me. Never bothered me.

SkaneTos · 16/11/2024 21:05

Not too similar at all.
Use the name you want to use, and honour you grandfather, just like your cousin did. No problem.

I have cousins (first cousins) in my family named Chris and Christopher. Born the same year. Not a problem.

I would not think it was a problem even if it was the very same name.

user1492757084 · 17/11/2024 04:46

Not too similar.
Frank is the obvious short form.

I would only use Franklin if you loved that.
I would use Frank if I preferred that, even if for a second name.

GiraffeTree · 17/11/2024 04:49

I would not do this with a sibling's child but I think a cousin is fine.

urbanbuddha · 17/11/2024 05:39

They’re not the same name, people will hear the difference. If you’re really unsure you could just use Franklin as a middle name.

howluckyami25 · 17/11/2024 15:44

No body owns a name, if that's the name you like and want to use then use it ! It's lovely to honour a name xx congratulations xx

FranticFrankie · 17/11/2024 15:47

Might it get shortened to Frankie?
Lovely name 😍

RuthW · 17/11/2024 18:06

Use it.
