Do you think these are the same name? To me they are very different.
I want to call DS1 Frank after my dear grandfather but DP says we cannot because he has a friend who has a Franklin.
he did say Franklin never gets shorted to Frank and he is 12

I agree with you, very different feel to Franklin and Frank. Frank is a great name. If you use Francis nn Frank then it seems even more of a departure from Franklin. To me it does anyway.

They are different names to me too. I certainly wouldn’t see an issue with using Frank in your situation.

They're different names. Use Frank.
I'd say it's like Anna and Annabel. Different vibe.

They are related names but also popular so don’t think it matters.

Call him Francis with Frank as a nn to make it more different?

Different names.
Also
Different families.
Different ages.

I wouldn't let this stop me using Frank.

Frank used to be short for classic Francis, especially in the past. Franklin mostly used to be a surname but is now used as a forename likely in part to the “Surname as forename” trend (see Jackson, Harrison etc) or in honour of the Explorer or US Presidents. Frank is now trendy as a retro given name in its own right like Lenny, Reggie etc

So that reasoning seems a bit daft of your DP, especially since it’s your Grandads name too - there will be lots of Franks out there, it’s hardly unusual.

Im personally not especially keen on Frank ( as it’s getting a bit trendy now like other retro names) but even if a friend’s DS was known as Frank, rather than Franklin it still wouldn’t stop me using it if I loved the name. He’s not a close relative so not same surname, won’t see him daily, won’t be in same school class etc.

But if DP won’t agree to it as a first, I think it’d be lovely as middle- how nice to honour your Grandad.
