Frank and Franklin..

I was told by MIL I should put Franklin on the BC as it is the longer more formal version but to me they are very different names.
I much prefer Frank and thought it was a name in its own right. I assumed Francis was the longer version of Frank but did not think a longer version was needed please help.

I would just put Frank.

Nothing wrong with Frank.

useitorlose · 26/08/2023 07:17

Please yourself. Its your baby.

Ohyousillydivvy · 26/08/2023 07:22

Frances and Franklin are two different names and Frank can be a nn for either of them.

I put a longer name on the bc for my son as it gives him options when he's older. He might not like the nn of his name when he's a man & prefers something a bit more grown up.

Your baby, your choice but do remember he's got to carry the name from childhood to adulthood.

ToughFuss · 26/08/2023 07:24

I’m normally of the opinion that the ‘full’ name should be put on the birth certificate (Frederick for Freddie, Charles for Charlie etc) but actually with Frank, I think ‘just’ Frank is fine!

Midgely23 · 26/08/2023 07:39

I do not see Franklin and Frank as the same name though, does anyone else agree?
Frank to me is an old name whereas Franklin seems modern and American

I agree OP, they're are different names.

PerspiringElizabeth · 26/08/2023 07:42

Your question is a bit strange - they COULD of course be the ‘same name’ if someone is called Franklin and goes by Frank. Equally someone could be called Frank, in which case no, Franklin is not their name.

heldinadream · 26/08/2023 07:43

I agree they're different names. Frank is a perfectly good name OP. And what's more, your MIL a) has no say in what you call your baby and b) will get used to it. So nod, smile, hmmm. And then do what you like. 😀

Swearwolf · 26/08/2023 08:11

Franklin isn't particularly modern, there have been two American presidents called Franklin, born 100+ years ago. American, I will give you that!

Just put Frank if that's what you want to call him.

00100001 · 26/08/2023 08:12

Just put Frank.

Nobody needs a "formal" first name.

BrandyandGinger · 26/08/2023 08:24

I think Frank and Franklin are different names. Americans are more more likely to use last names as first names. I never looked it up but I assume FDR was called after Benjamin Franklin.

nameXname · 26/08/2023 09:42

Traditionally, Frank was an informal version of Francis.

As others have said, Franklin was originally a surname and is associated with American statesmen Benjamin Franklin and Franklin D Roosevelt.

Whatsthepoint1234 · 26/08/2023 11:32

Just call the baby Frank. Ds is Tom, just Tom. If you are only going to call the baby Frank, name him Frank.

continentallentil · 26/08/2023 12:04

Frank is fine as short forms go.

I think it’s been used as an independent name for a long time, and also as short form of Francis. Franklin is newish here, but has been used in the US for a while.

If you want to be traditional I suppose Francis nn Frank would be the one to go for.

Neverseenbefore · 26/08/2023 12:07

Frank is traditionally short for Francis.

KirstenBlest · 26/08/2023 12:48

If you want to be traditional I suppose Francis nn Frank would be the one to go for.
This.
I like Francis and Frances but an awful lot of people will not be able to grasp that a Francis is male and a Frances female.

Franklin IMO is too american. Just Frank is fine.

UrsulaBelle · 26/08/2023 13:51

Frank is normally short for Francis. The girl’s name, Frances, is often shortened to Fran or Franny. If you like Frank but not Francis, stick with Frank. I feel the same way about Charles and Charlie. I dislike the name Charles so would use Charlie, which I like.
