I’m interested in hearing how you picture the following names as adults (if that makes sense), for example the name Charles I would picture quite a well to do business man.

Sonny
Remy
Jonah
Thomas
Theodore
Milo
Miles
Joey
Ralphie

Sonny - long haired layabout
Remy - a chef
Jonah - surfer
Thomas - strait-laced goody goody
Theodore - Cool and clever and good looking
Milo - nerdy IT whizz kid
Miles - slob
Joey - doesn’t take life seriously
Ralphie - weirdo perv (The Sopranos)

CrazylazyJane · 11/11/2024 12:26

They all seem quite arty-farty to me.

Sonny - he works in media or creative ICT
Remy - a musician
Jonah - blond hair, chino shorts and polo top
Thomas - takes himself very seriously
Theodore - very posh, wife buys his clothes from Boden each summer ready for their trip to France with the twins.
Milo - Peter Pan. Milo hasn't actually stayed in a job longer than a year but is 'crowd sourcing' for his next venture.
Miles - Rah! Milo's friend from their Prep school days.
Joey - Sweet but a bit clueless
Ralphie - mummy's boy, despite having a wife and 3 kids.

CryptoFascist · 11/11/2024 12:26

Sonny - Doesn't understand why old people sing "I got you babe" at him
Remy - the rat. He's a sous chef
Jonah - Chubby guy, a friendly drunk who doesn't take life seriously (but has a dark side he's trying to stifle)
Thomas - Known as Tom by everyone apart from his mum. He's an average guy.
Theodore - Known as Theo by everyone including his mum. He got ok grades and was the class clown. Now he works in a bathroom installation shop
Milo - Hipster, he collects old records and thinks that's a personality trait. Ironically he introduces himself by telling you his Myers-Briggs type
Miles - Has friends called Giles, Rafe and Jonty. Loves rugby and cocaine.
Joey - Is an adult kangaroo and is very self-conscious his birth certificate doesn't say Joseph
Ralphie - No adult is called Ralphie. This is impossible to visualise. I am picturing Robin Williams in that film where he's an adult baby or something.

Some of these responses have really made me giggle 😂 I particularly liked the detail about Thomas having a constant sniffle!

In response to which is my favourite, they’re all names that have come up at some point for us whilst trying to choose a name - no favourite but like them all! I always try to picture names on adults so was interested to see if others do the same. I have a particularly hard time seeing Ralphie on an adult.

Why not call him Ralph and use Ralphie as a nickname?

DaylightTreachery · 11/11/2024 12:31

Like all names, they just say ‘This was my parents’ taste’.

My name, and my siblings’ names, for instance, say only ‘My parents didn’t give this any thought, their only two criteria were ‘inoffensive’ and ‘used by a lot of other people so we don’t stand out from the crowd’’, and it’s clear they never said them out loud with our surname before naming us, as the emphases make them hard to say.

Danceswithweasels · 11/11/2024 12:34

DS is Joseph, nicknamed Joey while he's young. It's not a proper given name is it? Presumably it's Joe from teenage years and beyond?.

Same here. Some friends call him Joey or Joe. I don't shorten it. He's a lovely lovely child definitely wouldn't be a part time PT 🥴

catin8oots · 11/11/2024 13:12

Sonny - surfer bro
Remy - works in antiques
Jonah - fuck boy
Thomas - fat estate agent
Theodore - does art/ceramics
Milo - cool dude city bro
Miles - doctor

Sonny - miserable tosser
Remy - teaching assistant, always going on about how he’s half French
Jonah - agree with PP he runs a vegan surf shack
Thomas - if not Tom he’s probably a bellringer or antique books collector
Theodore - golden retriever
Milo - went on a gap year, thinks he’s the only one who ever has
Miles - privately educated but somehow still never learnt to use a hankie when he’s got hay fever which is all summer
Joey - drummer and plumber
Ralphie - isn’t in prison but should be, wouldn’t let him look after your stick insects let alone your kids

Vegan surf shack just ended me

Attelina · 11/11/2024 13:17

If you like Ralphie, would you like Rafe?

CandiedPrincess · 11/11/2024 13:18

I have a DS with one of these names and I am dying. 😂 I'll come back in 20 years and tell you who was right.

Totally agree with this. We all think we can shape a child (and the adult they grow up to be) through their name but we may as well give them a letter of the alphabet for all the good it does.

My parents' criteria was 'will people be able to pronounce it and spell it?' And that's about it.

Onlyvisiting · 11/11/2024 13:21

Sonny - American. Not a real name, would assume a nickname.
Remy. Girl! (Only one I've met is)
Jonah. Hipster.
Thomas. Normal, farmer.
Theodore. Works at something big businessey in London
Milo. Hipster
Miles. Very middle class.
Joey. Parents couldn't spell Joseph or were addicted to friends.
Ralphie. Terribly posh, or a 3 year old. nothing in between

BobbyBiscuits · 11/11/2024 13:24

Milo is an artist from quite a posh family.
Miles works in IT, smart but geeky, from a more modest background.
I cannot imagine an adult called 'ralphie'. It reminds me of the dumb wiggum kid from Simpsons.
Joey, again sounds a bit childish. But maybe something to do with sport. Footballer, PE teacher, PT.
Jonah I think makes me imagine they might be into hardcore Christianity, like a preacher or something.
Remy is a singer or music producer, attractive looking, from a modest background but successful.
Sonny has bad connotations as my auntie had an abusive boyfriend with that name. So he'd be a farmer who beats his wife.
Thomas is a doctor, chartered accountant, statistician. Something pretty sober and serious.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 11/11/2024 13:26

Sonny - drug dealer
Remy - hippie wanker
Jonah - smug, unkind
Thomas - normal, salt of the earth, solid family man
Theodore- bit posh but decent.
Milo- traumatised after being named after a dog
Miles- city twat, hates women
Joey - nice guy, but still a man child
Ralphie- still lives at home. No job, thinks he can make it as an influencer. Still attached to mums apron strings

Oh don’t worry, I absolutely don’t think the name will shape the child - this is purely curiosity and a bit of fun to see what different people picture! I know that they will just become who they become, regardless of what they’re called.

I find it interesting how different people picture each name, I guess a lot of it is personal associations. Like Ralphie I absolutely wouldn’t picture in jail but that’s been said a few times, I just picture a bit of a geek 😂

Sonny is a non name to me, Its a nickname and lacks imagination.

I like most of the others, although Miles is a bit 1980s Hooray Henry.
And I would use a full name for Joey and Remy

Was talking to someone the other day who is pregnant and thinking of Ralphie. I can't get my head round it because I don't think it flows off the tongue at all. It is a bit of a mouthful.
But Ralph, Rafe, Raphael, Raffie are all fabulous names. I don't know why you would choose Ralphie from those options.

Sonny Is a winner in life and always lands on his feet. He’s one of those if he fell down the sewer he’d come up dripping in gold.

Remy. I only picture a little girl, sorry.

Jonah. Not being lazy but see Sonny.

Thomas. If he’s a Tom when he’s older I imagine a total gentleman that opens doors for women and walks on the outside of the pavement. Treats his mum and wife and other women in his life like Queens.
Tommy however although is lovely and would give you the shirt of his back is more of a cheeky crappy and always cracking jokes.
His presence can get a tad grating after a while.

Theodore. Lawyer for the prosecution who has never lost a case. Drives a Porsche lives in a 5 bed house and is married to Chloe who is a nurse.

Miles. Posh educated great sense of humor. Works hard and plays hard.

Milo Same as Miles.

Joey. See Tommy.

Ralphie. Is in his 80s and worked has a ship’s Pirate. His great great grandkids love listening to him talking about his life at sea and playing Pirate games with him.
He’s a natural story teller. He’s a gentleman around women and children. However with his friends who he sees down the pub every Sunday and Thursday night he swears like a Sailor.

Haha. I named both my kids thinking ' ooh they are good strong names'. The kids are totally different to how i ever pictured they'd be 😆 both lovely though

CurlewKate · 11/11/2024 15:51

Sonny, Remy, Ralphie and Joeyi would secretly judge his parents unless I knew they were shortenings he had chosen for himself. The others are all good solid names.

Aggie15 · 11/11/2024 18:03

Sonny-American Italian in NYC
Remy sensitive artistic
Jonah escapee from a Christian fundamentalist sect
Thomas anything goes, life and soul of the party
Theodore middle class passed his 11+, bright future ahead
Milo far-right loony
Miles Oxbridge educated Tory advisor, interchangeable with Milo
Joey bookie or car salesman
Ralphie mama's boy

OAPapparently · 11/11/2024 18:11

Sonny - doesn’t conjure up good things - a drop out who hangs out with other drop outs in a pub who say ‘alright son’ whenever they see him. I don’t know why!

Remy - a poet type, long dark hair, wears colourful shirts and takes himself very seriously.

Jonah - blonde, nice looking, laid-back manner

Thomas - Tom - the reliable solid one, but a bit boring.

Theodore - If shortened to Theo then a bit of a twat, If Teddy I just picture the character on Eastenders

Milo - a purple Tweenie (too much kids tv over the years!)

Miles - slimey , smarmy estate agent

Joey - the cheeky happy, kind, sweet. Nice guy.

Ralphie - a massive mummy’s boy who hasn’t grown up.
