Hi everyone, my husband and I are seriously struggling to choose a baby name. We have decided we want a strong and more masculine name as opposed to something girlie.

what is everyone talking preference on the names in the title? Or are there any name ideas that fit our preference? Many thanks in advance!

Gosh they're all not my taste.

Blaire - Tony?
Sloane - Sloane ranger?
Quinn? Marginally less awful but not great!

Strong surname like names:

Lindsay
Dylan
Avery
Darcy
Emery

SquawkerTexasRanger · 09/11/2024 21:41

I love them all.

Stella
Shea (Pronounced Shay)
Harlow

CorvusPurpureus · 09/11/2024 21:45

Harlow does rather risk the famous Jean Harlow 'silent t' quip.

I think if I was trying to avoid obviously female names for a dd, I'd go for unisex nature names rather than the quite dated surname thing.

Rowan?

Mumofgirls2017 · 09/11/2024 21:50

I like Quinn. Other ideas

brooke
riley
river
remy
bobbie
grey
rae
wren
blake

Veryoldandtired · 09/11/2024 21:50

Quinn is a lovely name.
Ula?

Berga · 09/11/2024 21:52

Quinn is my favourite of your list. Also Wren or Ren. What about Sydney?

Moreteaandchocolate · 09/11/2024 22:06

None are my taste - Blair is the best. (Sloane ranger / Quim)

Met a baby girl Maxwell the other day 😊

Youvebeenframed · 09/11/2024 22:10

To clarify … for a girl? 🤔

GoodVibesHere · 09/11/2024 22:32

I don't like Blaire, it's too much like Claire. Plus it sounds like a noise...like 'Bleurgh'

How about:

Robin / Robyn
Ronnie (Veronica)
Erika
Athena
Frankie (Frances)
Amber

wandawaves · 09/11/2024 22:34

Quinn is ok. I really hate Sloane, it's just sounds so awful. And I don't like Blair.

TheRutshireWI · 09/11/2024 22:34

Lionel Blair or Tony
Sloane Ranger or square
Quinn looks like Quim

gestroopd · 09/11/2024 22:35

I assumed Sloane and Quinn were for a boy. I know a girl called James, so I Hagues anything goes, but it's a bit unfair to decide how ungirlie your DD is going to be before she's even born. If the name is too masculine then she may easily end up feeling she has to compensate in some way for it. And there may also be jokes about "did your parents think you were going to be a boy?" Or, "Your parents must have really wanted a boy!"

There are strong names, often from northern countries (Inga) or anglicised French ones (Geraldine, Audrey), that aren't overtly feminine in English are strong, but allow her to be a girl too. Or something like official name Georgina, with George/Georgie nickname. Or Samantha. Etc.

Ellmau · 09/11/2024 22:36

For a boy or a girl?

TBH I don't like any of them

What about Jordan or Jocelyn? Those are quite unisex to me. Or Rowan.

Peachtastic · 09/11/2024 22:38

I know a few female Quinns.don't like it for a boy at all!

Stevie
Frankie
Brodie
Taylor
Jorgie

fashionqueen0123 · 09/11/2024 22:39

Someone posted about these names a while ago.

Sloane ranger.
Blaire looks like someone spelt Claire wrong.
Go for Quinn! I wouldn’t say it’s masculine though and have met very girly girls called it.

Georgie743 · 09/11/2024 22:39

Quinn is definitely the best of those 3. I think it's a similar vibe to:

Billie
Frankie
Winter (nn Winnie)
Lola
Piper
Edie
Essie
Stevie
Lux
Lexi
Wren

Cecilly · 09/11/2024 22:40

My youngest just started rewatching Malory Towers and I thought the name Darrell was actually quite nice.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 09/11/2024 22:42

I like Quinn, but not the other two.

I'm throwing in:
Eden
Christian (a few female ones in my family tree. Weirdly I don't like it for a boy tho)
Sydney

Firsttimebabymummy · 09/11/2024 22:48

Quinn is the only one I like, but I do really like it.

pooballs · 09/11/2024 22:48

I like Sloane, reminds me of Ferris buellers day off

What about Nell or Kate? Quite strong names, feminine but not at all fussy/frilly or girly.

Not keen on Blaire

Rowan?

You realise that Rowan is a surname… right?

DaylightTreachery · 10/11/2024 00:22

Blair, Quinn and Sloane suggest parents who watch a lot of bad tv.

TheMotherSide · 10/11/2024 00:26

Blythe?

Quinn is nice.

Sloane and Blaire not so much.
