Hi everyone, my husband and I are seriously struggling to choose a baby name. We have decided we want a strong and more masculine name as opposed to something girlie.

what is everyone talking preference on the names in the title? Or are there any name ideas that fit our preference? Many thanks in advance!

Not a fan of your choices. How about go for strong female that are actually overtly female.

Margaret
Irene
Marjorie
Winifred
Elspeth
Astrid

All horrible. She’s having a baby, not an 80 year old.

Elspeth sounds like my three year old trying to pronounce the name Elizabeth

I love all three, but I just think they’re all a bit too American to use in the UK.

I’d personally rule out Blair for the “blur” pronunciation it would have where I live in the North.

Sloane and Quinn were both shortlist names for me too, and if I lived in America DD would be Sloane. DH vetoed Quinn because it sounds like Quim…

Sorry - yes. I think Sloane might be Irish too. I more meant the surname as a girl’s first name is very American and I think even Quinn is typically an Irish surname which gives it the American vibes for me.

FrequentlyAskedQuestion · 11/11/2024 11:05

Not Sloane or Blair

HarrietBond · 11/11/2024 11:12

I love Rowan and would chuck Laurie in there (Antonia Forest name fan).

Rory as a nickname for Aurora is one I also like but DH firmly sat on that.

I do think the late Victorian/Edwardian woman's names give good strong vibes; Maud, Joan, Edith, Dorothy, Florence, Beatrice, Rowena.

mugglewump · 11/11/2024 11:12

I am not keen on your choices, sorry. For not too girly girls names, I'd look at unisex names; Rowan, Morgan, Aubrey, Dani, Luca, Bailey, Blaise or Sacha are all good examples.

Blair witch.
Sloane square.
Quinn sounds like quim.

Dont do it OP.

Be wary of picking masculine names for a girl - it's all about James for a girl but it's never Sarah for a boy so there's an innate sexism in masculine names for girls IMO.

There's loads of non frilly girls' names - as a rule of thumb, avoid names ending in -ah or -ee sounds. Names that end in -th or -n are stronger, for example, IMO. So Elizabeth is stronger than Ellie or Ella (IMO).

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 13/11/2024 20:13

Quinn

mathanxiety · 13/11/2024 21:45

I knew a Blaire when I was a child way back in the 70s. I've never met a male Blair or Blaire (though it is an unusual name so perhaps not surprising that I've only met one).

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 13/11/2024 22:06

Quinn reminds of the characters from Daria and Glee.

lalalaheyhey111 · 13/11/2024 22:27

I like Sloane, I've heard it a couple of times recently. How about
Billie
Morgan
Cameron
