Hi everyone, my husband and I are seriously struggling to choose a baby name. We have decided we want a strong and more masculine name as opposed to something girlie.

what is everyone talking preference on the names in the title? Or are there any name ideas that fit our preference? Many thanks in advance!

Blaire, Sloane and Quinn all sound very girly to me, like characters in a US high school TV show such as Glee.

I'd go for an actual man's name if you want a masculine name for a girl.

thomasinacat · 10/11/2024 01:22

Quinn just makes me instantly think of the Eskimo. But maybe that's far back enough most people won't make that link, so wouldn't get that sung repeatedly.

Copperoliverbear · 10/11/2024 03:44

Sorry they all sound like surnames to me.

I assumed Sloane and Quinn were for a boy. I know a girl called James, so I Hagues anything goes, but it's a bit unfair to decide how ungirlie your DD is going to be before she's even born. If the name is too masculine then she may easily end up feeling she has to compensate in some way for it. And there may also be jokes about "did your parents think you were going to be a boy?" Or, "Your parents must have really wanted a boy!"

There are strong names, often from northern countries (Inga) or anglicised French ones (Geraldine, Audrey), that aren't overtly feminine in English are strong, but allow her to be a girl too. Or something like official name Georgina, with George/Georgie nickname. Or Samantha. Etc.

I was/am a female James. I am 43 now and changed my name when I was 25 to something be more feminine and normal
Don't saddle your daughter with a confusing manly name.

If you pick Blaire then your daughter’s contemporaries will think that you are a gossip girl fan and added an e to be unique. If you are unfamiliar then Google Blair Waldorf.

Quinn will make people think of Harley Quinn.

Do you live in London ? In which case Sloane is not a compliment and she’d be considered like Chelsea. Or people will think that you are a Greys Anatomy fan and hoped for a boy (Mark Sloane is a famous character)

Gossip Girl and Greys Anatomy are watched by teens now even though they were broadcast before teens were born.

knitnerd90 · 10/11/2024 04:32

These names are very much the American "surname as first name" trend. That's not a slam as I live in the USA, just an observation. When a name gets picked up into that trend, it becomes a "girl name". If I heard someone named Blaire or Quinn here I would assume girl. They are strong in that crisply monosyllabic way, but be aware that if this trend picks up steam in the UK, they will be perceived as feminine.

GoldenLegend · 10/11/2024 05:12

With all the lovely names there are to choose from why would you call your daughter something that is a surname? You don’t have to pick a ‘frilly’ name: Joan, Toni, Petra, Lee, Maud are all short and strong.

I know a few female Quinns.don't like it for a boy at all!

Stevie
Frankie
Brodie
Taylor
Jorgie

I love Stevie for a girl.

AlexaSetATimer · 10/11/2024 05:21

Maybe it's growing up in Glasgow, but any kid called Quinn would have been instantly nicknamed Quim and called a Fanny forever more. Just can't think of anything else but genitalia with that name. Sorry!

Sloane is Ranger for me but that shows my age. I like it apart from that. It would be my choice of your 3.

Blaire hmmm it's a bit ... meh? A lifetime of correcting people who mishear Claire?

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 10/11/2024 07:03

I like Quinn.

Blaire is alright but feels very American. Don’t like Sloane

MerryMarys · 10/11/2024 07:24

I only know boys called Quinn

Either as a standalone name or short for Quentin

There are far better names for a girl!

marshmallowfinder · 10/11/2024 07:49

Blaire reminds me of bleurrgh.
Sloane is just awful with negative connotations.
Quinn is OK but too much like quim.

Same re Quinn but I think that’s what OP I’d going for. It’s a unisex name or an Irish surname 😊

OSU · 10/11/2024 11:41

Not a fan of your choices. How about go for strong female that are actually overtly female.

Margaret
Irene
Marjorie
Winifred
Elspeth
Astrid

Whatisityoucantface · 10/11/2024 19:17

I prefer Briar to Blaire (witch project)
How about Leni, Piper, Marlowe, Harper, Rumer, Scout, Riley?

Heatherbell1978 · 10/11/2024 19:34

I like Blair but spelt Blair. It's a fairly common boys name in Scotland. Not sure adding an e makes it a girls name? In fact they're all surnames surely?

Meowingtwice · 10/11/2024 19:41

Not Blaire - sounds like Tony. I prefer others suggested in the thread like Eden, Madison, Taylor, Erica, Robyn, Billie. Also to add Jamie, Blake, Autumn.

TheRestIsEntertainment · 10/11/2024 19:44

I know baby girls Blaire and Sloan and I find it hard to say their names without flinching. They just sound awful to me, especially Sloan(e). Quinn sounds like Quim. I also know a baby girl Blake, which is not very nice on a boy never mind a girl.

I think there are plenty of unisex or female names that are not frilly or fussy and can still sound strong and snappy. Loads of good suggestions on this thread already.

Groovee · 10/11/2024 19:48

Blair and Blake are names I've heard used for a Girl

WiseOldPusscat · 10/11/2024 20:09

I love the names Sloane and Quinn! Blaire I prefer without the E.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 10/11/2024 20:24

Sorry not keen on the 3 you list.
How about:-
Grayling
Piper
Reagan
Victoria
Harriet

Cameron
Meredith
