I like Aoife and Maeve but there's so many of them.

I don't like Aoife and Maeve much (sorry!) I do like Roisin though. Pronounced Ro-sheen yes? Smile

I agree. Roisin much much more. It's a really nice name.

MistyF · 05/11/2024 19:36

I wouldn't worry about is name dated in original country if you don't live in it. For example, don't worry if Roisin is dated in Ireland if you don't live in Ireland because each country/state/place has its own trends and it may be too complicated to follow trends in different countries.
If you love Róisín, just use it.

oneill19 · 05/11/2024 19:37

Yes, Ro-sheen. Not sure if we need the fadas? DH would probably insist.

We're in Ireland but not a very fashionable part!

I know a few in their 40s, two in their teens and one primary age. If you like it, use it! Róise is nice too with Róisín as a pet name.

ImaRoisin · 05/11/2024 19:43

Best name ever but I am biased.

It hasn’t waned in popularity from what I can see. I often see baby ones in my work.

girljulian · 05/11/2024 19:44

I love it.

Alasar · 05/11/2024 19:44

You need the fadas! My name has a fada and without it, it wouldn't be my name!

LaNameChange · 05/11/2024 19:52

I know a little Roisin, it's a lovely name

2024BabyNameIndecision · 05/11/2024 19:56

I love Roisin but DH wasn't keen 😫 Agree on Maeve - we were very undecided on names for DD2 and we quite liked Maeve. We used it for 2 days and in that time we met 3 others (South London) so we went for something different. Luckily we hadn't told any of the family yet! 🙈

oneill19 · 05/11/2024 20:10

Just call it a trial run 2024!

I don't love anything really, although I do dislike plenty lol. I think I'll need to see the baby first too.

Absolutely. Rőisín without the fadas would be, roughly, ‘Russian’!

SoporificLettuce · 05/11/2024 20:19

Róisín is lovely.
Yes, do please keep the fadas!
comhghairdeas! 💕

Berlinlover · 05/11/2024 20:22

Roisin is beautiful. Aoife is boring and Maeve is absolutely awful.

notenoughteaintheworld · 05/11/2024 21:09

Irish names are hugely popular at the moment in the toddler groups I’ve been at for the last few years (hi, Ireland based) and it feels like the rarer, the better?

I have known two Roisins ever, and both are now in their 30s. It’s a lovely name. The only drawback is if they emigrate, they will end up being Raisins with an o.

Scrimt · 05/11/2024 21:41

Róise seems to be the more fashionable Rose name in Ireland these days. Róisín is fine but yes, a bit boring. But I think that of a lot of Irish names. We all grew up with a million Aoifes, Orlas and Emers. So now I'm drawn to fancy foreign names 😂

Scrimt · 05/11/2024 21:41

I actually really like Róise. Seems lovely and fresh.

StressedQueen · 05/11/2024 22:49

I know one who is 17.

How are we pronouncing that?

roe-shuh

Apileofballyhoo · 06/11/2024 12:10

Roe sheh, like the e sound in the word leg but you'll hear Roe sha and Roe shuh as a pp said.

theamooberry · 06/11/2024 19:10

I adore Maeve, Roisin although pretty reminds me of a raisin if they were to travel/emigrate and Róise is gorg

oneill19 · 07/11/2024 19:39

Woke up today with my mind totally changed and all three are downgraded to only likes. I want a love. Dammit!

I think maybe it is a bit dated as it was very common when I was in school (I'm 30 now) but not too much so!
Other ideas:
Ailbhe
Fodhla
Liadan
Fiadh
Caoimhe
Siomha
Sadhbh
Cadhla
Saoirse
Siofra
Aisling

Or, less obviously Irish but still slightly, Cara, Evanna or Alanna
