Thoughts on Lumina?

Lumina is name of Latin origin. I heard it's first used in 1800s and it means 'lights'. I pronounce it LOO-me-na and potential nickname I would use, if needed, is Lumie, but I prefer Lumina.

What do you think?

Sounds like a brand of contraceptive pill to me - sorry

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 31/10/2024 08:52

Don't like it. Lucia is loads nicer.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 31/10/2024 08:52

I just think of hair removal... sorry OP it's awful. Pregnancy hormones are cruel.

@nameXname Miranda wasn't a name either until Shakepeare took it from the Latin 'mirandus'. As created names go, taking something from a Latin root is WAY better than just whacking a load of random letters together.

I agree with you but when clock, hair removal and contraception brands have already done it, it just doesn't work for a baby's name.

It ought to be lovely as it does capture the zeitgeist of current names and it is a melodic word with a nice meaning, but it struck me immediately as the name of a beauty brand.

Also I would struggle to get past the LOO bit. Sorry!

I agree with this. I can see why it should be lovely but it just doesn’t work.

It immediately made me think of one of those glow in the dark animal night lights children have : “Three characters to choose from Nightray the Rabbit, Glowy the Bear or Lumina the Cat.”

There is also a brand of vitamins called Lumity.

It’s just too brand-namey, and actually we had a Mina at school and she was mean so I always think of it now as Meaner. So “Loo- Meaner” I’m just not feeling.

BUT I totally understand your interest in a name that means light, and I love Lucia as a name.

Calliopespa · 31/10/2024 09:12

It also sounds slightly like the new female reindeer who will take over when Rudolf retires ( which must be soon come to think of it…)

evtheria · 31/10/2024 09:16

It sounds like a smart gadget eg the lamps, etc people have mentioned. Luna (though sadly very much a 'dog name' now), Lucia, Luz, Lux, Selene, Aurora, Stella... all preferable choices for girl names to do with light.

It seems I am in minority as know of the name Lumi and like names starting with Lumi- although not met anybody named Lumina. Much more exciting than Lucy. And more whimsical and fresher than Luna. Lumia? Luminka? Luminia? Lumiella? Lumilla / Ludmila?

From other websites: “Lumi” means “snow” in Finnish, making this cozy name particularly brilliant for a baby born during the beautiful wintertime. Lumi works for both boys and girls, and its “luminous” sound makes it cast a warm, shining glow over all who bear it.

Lumi is ideal for winter babies with its chilly meaning, particularly if you’re not attracted to traditional winter names like Ivy and Holly. Lumi rolls off the tongue with its short, spunky pronunciation and spelling that will appeal outside her native Finland.

Yes me too, as soon as I read the thread title I instantly thought of this. Then the nickname I thought of the alarm clock.

Snap.

MistyF · 31/10/2024 14:10

I do agree it sounds like a product, so I have to think some more about the name, but probably won't use it.
Thank you for suggestions.

Edited

Luminia sounds like an STD.

Lumia sounds like a brand name for a torch an obgyn would use to do cervical smears. “ Nurse, can you hand me the Lumia?”

I do think Lumi could be cute. Ludmilla is actually a name and Mila is a cute nn.

Crunchymum · 31/10/2024 18:28

Quite like Lumen (I may or may not have recently watched a series with a character of that name!)

ZuckketyZuckZuck · 31/10/2024 18:33

I'd think it was the name of a knock-off light/alarm clock sold on amazon.

Calliopespa · 31/10/2024 18:38

Crunchymum · 31/10/2024 18:28

Quite like Lumen (I may or may not have recently watched a series with a character of that name!)

When said, though, it sounds like Lemon 🍋 which is going even further than 🍎 apple. And did we ever decide Apple was a good name?

Crunchymum · 31/10/2024 18:41

It's actually pronounced loo-men (in the series I heard it in) and I'd not made any connection to lemon 😂

Apple is sadly a no from me.

BoudiccasBangles · 31/10/2024 18:48

Sounds like a light bulb or an ovulation app.

Waterboatlass · 31/10/2024 19:34

I love the sound but it means an inner space or cavity. If a kid went into a medical field especially with that name they would not be thankful.

theduchessofspork · 01/11/2024 13:53

Light bulbs so no.

How about Luella or Lucia?

Calliopespa · 01/11/2024 15:27

Has anyone else got the Braun epilator ad coming up on this thread?

Wantsummerback88 · 01/11/2024 15:32

Not my taste sorry!

Wantsummerback88 · 01/11/2024 15:32

Lucia
Lucille
Lucinda
Lucy
As other suggestions?

RobertaFirmino · 07/11/2024 22:55

Sounds too much like a hard-core tranquilizer to me. The type rock stars used to fatally overdose on in the 70s. Sorry. There are much prettier names to choose.

witeless · 07/11/2024 23:06

Makes me think of Leukaemia 🫣

GoldenSunflowers · 07/11/2024 23:16

I know a Luminita (pronounced Luminitza) shortened to Lumi, so I love it. It sounds luminous to me.

Lumens are the measure of the power of lightbulbs.
