Thoughts on Lumina?

Lumina is name of Latin origin. I heard it's first used in 1800s and it means 'lights'. I pronounce it LOO-me-na and potential nickname I would use, if needed, is Lumie, but I prefer Lumina.

What do you think?

I actually know a Lumina (pronounced Lumeena). I've always thought it unusual but not outrageous!

Stealinghollywood · 30/10/2024 17:50

Lumi is an ice bath make. Lumina isn’t even a name. Don’t saddle your baby with this word.

nameXname · 30/10/2024 18:35

Lumina as a word does have Latin origins, but it's not really a Latin name. (For names meaning 'light', the Romans used Lucia ((f) or Lucius (m) https://www.behindthename.com/name/lucius )

Lumina is the plural of the Latin word 'lumen', which is usually translated as 'torch' or 'light' (as in 'daylight'). It was sometimes used rather poetically to mean 'eyes' (because they are, like a torch, a mechanism for seeing) and also the 'light' of certain faiths or of understanding.

It's related to the words 'luminous' and 'illuminations', as others have already said.

To name a baby 'Lumina' would be rather like calling them 'torches' or 'lightbulbs' or, perhaps, 'illuminations'.

If you Google Lumina, you get references to online gaming, an AI company, a personal development company, a lighting company, a horror film and much, much more. They might all be fine for you, but it might be worth double-checking

There’s a Romanian name, Luminita (pronounced “Luminitsa”) that might be better?

Muchtoomuchtodo · 30/10/2024 18:40

I’m pretty sure a set of our drinking glasses from Argos are called that.

I’m not keen.

CrushingOnRubies · 30/10/2024 18:45

Not keen I'm afraid

Sounds like a branded name for a l company which makes lamps

user2848502016 · 30/10/2024 18:47

No please don't, it's awful sorry!
Lucia, Lucinda, Lucy or maybe Luna are much nicer alternatives

HecatesBees · 30/10/2024 18:47

Isn't it a hair removal device?

oakleaffy · 30/10/2024 18:49

Sounds like a grow light for cannabis!

295bkq · 30/10/2024 18:50

Just use Lucy, Luna or Luella or something like that

Lumina sounds like a light company or a hair removal device

Sashya · 30/10/2024 18:52

It's a name of a device that reads metabolic rate, or smth.

Don't do it to your child

KnittingOnEmpty · 30/10/2024 18:53

I worked with a lovely girl called Luminita from Romania years ago - nn Nita(“nee-tsh-ah”). Maybe without knowing her it’d be a no from me but she was fab so I’d say yes!

DitheringBlidiot · 30/10/2024 18:56

I think it sounds like a menstrual cup brand

CallYourselfAChef · 30/10/2024 18:57

😂😂😂

StormingNorman · 30/10/2024 18:57

I’ve never seen a name so unanimously panned before.

AutumnLeaves24 · 30/10/2024 19:00

Pollypoppy · 30/10/2024 13:52

It sounds like a relative of Lumiere from Beauty And The Beast so it’s a no from me.

Exactly.

its not a name. How about Lucia?

Jessie1259 · 30/10/2024 19:02

Sorry OP it sounds like a B and Q light fitting.

Scrabbelator · 30/10/2024 19:03

It made me think of Phillips Lumea for hair removal

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 30/10/2024 19:07

Ask your pharmacist about Lumina.

Step away from the Scrabble bag, unique/different/interesting names are a pain in the arse for life and I should know, believe me!

Isitfridayyetsophie · 30/10/2024 13:53

Yes me too, as soon as I read the thread title I instantly thought of this. Then the nickname I thought of the alarm clock.

Me too

rhubay · 30/10/2024 19:18

Sounds like a fancy light bulb?

rhubay · 30/10/2024 19:20

If you are dead set on lights, what about Aurora?

oakleaffy · 30/10/2024 19:27

Luminol - a substance used for spotting blood in murder sites.
