Robin for a boy

I’m 15 weeks with my first baby, I’m finding out next week whether it’s a boy or a girl but I’ve got slightly overexcited and I’ve already got a long list of names for both!

My top contender for a boy is Robin, I love that it’s classic but quite under-used. I don’t know whether people would tend to assume that Robin is a girl though? DH isn’t hugely keen but it does turn out we are having a boy I’m hoping to wear him down 😅.

Other boy names I like are Cedric and Jasper, basically anything that gets accused of being “wet” sounding on here.

Any thoughts or suggestions welcome!

I like it! I only know one little boy Robin and a little girl Robyn.

I think most people would assume boy if spelt with an 'i'

I know two boys called Robin and no girls! I would probably assume Robin to be a boy and Robyn a girl.

I’m hoping that the Robin/Robyn spelling would make it more obvious. I do know a couple of adult women Robins spelt like that, but no children or babies, I don’t think it’s being used very widely as a girls name at the moment.

I have one so I obviously really like it. Round where we live I have come across two boy Robins and actually quite a few girls, most with the Y spelling but a few 'I's. It's classically a boys name though so I don't think that matters. I wanted something which was rareish but easy to spell and pronounce. The only disadvantage I would say is that Raffy, Ralph (said Rafe) etc seem to be very popular where we are so there might be a lot of "R" names at the same age.

I know several Robins. Only one is female and she's a Robyn.

Oh Robin remains my favourite name, although DP would not agree for DS, who became Reuben and I couldn't even use Robyn for DD because that would have been weird even for us. DPs objection was that he'd always get Rob, which feels.a very different name to Robin, and I could see what he meant. I also liked Rowan, Ashleigh and all the nature names which are of course unspeakably wet for a certain crowd

As long as your surname isn’t Banks, good name.

Love Robin for a boy. I don't like Robyn for a girl though, not sure why.

It's been a boy's name since (and probably before) Robin Hood!

I love Robin and it's one of our choices for if the baby I'm having is a boy. Popularity is subjective but you're in England & Wales I wouldn't call it underused. It's just outside the top 100 and rising. It's around 3 time more popular for boys than girls - though shifts to girls if you add Robyn. If your husband doesn't like it I'd look elsewhere though. What names is your husband suggesting? If he's just shooting down names without providing anything himself then maybe a name app like Kinder (like Tinder for baby names) might help you match on some names.

I love the name I think my Mother liked it as well but Dad said it was more of a child’s name than an adults one. Mind you I wanted to call my baby brother Christopher Robin I was 8 at the time. Needless to say it wasn’t accepted but they did use Christopher as a middle name.

And yes, my husband is slightly shooting down names without coming up with suggestions, I’ll have to get him on kinder and see if we can find some common ground.

i know a boy of that name, and once at secondary school decided to call himself Rob. Robbie is nice too.

My male cousin is Robin and he is lovely so I think fondly about it - however he goes mainly by Rob or Robbie these days

I’m a female Robyn. Throughout my life everyone assumes I’m a woman before meeting me, because of the Y spelling. I think Robin is usually associated with men.

I have always really loved my name, if that helps persuade your husband. It’s not too common but not too ‘out there’ either!
