Thoughts on the name Austin/Ostin. We live in the UK and are a mixed race family (if that makes a difference). Please be really honest.

Austin is fine. Perfectly normal name.
Ostin is odd 😬

SpringOne · 23/10/2024 08:36

I love Austin! Not keen on the Ostin spelling

HotCrossBunplease · 23/10/2024 08:38

If you spell it Ostin (never seen that before) people may read it quickly and think it is the Irish name Oisín.

Austin is nice though. Possibly a bit of a connection with Austin Powers but that’s not so well known these days.

Iwouldliketogoonholiday · 23/10/2024 08:45

My understanding is Ostin is the French spelling of Austin.

My understanding is Ostin is the French spelling of Austin.

That phrasing makes it sound like you aren’t French though?

Are you French?

French ancestry and mine and my daughter's names are of french origin.

No, it’s not. It’s not used in France at all. It seems to be mostly used in Chile: www.les-prenoms.org/prenom/ostin

Changeyourfuckingcar · 23/10/2024 08:49

Ostin just looks like you can’t spell and as someone who is (presumably!) not French and who is living in the uk, I wouldn’t opt for that spelling. It’s a bit.. ugly, dare I say it.
Austin, I like. I’ve only ever known lovely Austin/Austens as well so that sways me a little more. They’ll almost definitely be called Oz/Ozzy, so make sure that doesn’t bother you!

French ancestry (unless it's literally a French grandparent and even then) isn't a good enough reason to use this odd looking spelling of a perfectly common English name in the UK. If you want a French name, pick a French name, not what appears to be an English name with an obscure French spelling. Ostin wouldn't be pronounced like Austin if French would it? It would have a soft 'n'.

Ostin looks daft. Austin is nice enough.

Clearinguptheclutter · 23/10/2024 08:50

Austin is not to my taste but ok

Ostin looks like you can’t spell. If there was a French Ostin it would be pronounced Oss-TAN (soft nasal N)

Grepes · 23/10/2024 08:51

If you plan on spending most of your time in France, use the French spelling, if not use the English spelling. Austin has French origin (it’s from Augustin), so will match other family names, with the bonus that your child won’t have to correct people their whole life.

Oh wow this is the 4th thread in a row 😆

OP just make one thread with your names in. Making a separate thread for each one is annoying.

Yes agreed don't change the spelling. He will have a lifetime is saying Austin with an O to people. And then having to literally spell it out because people are stupid.

Again already explained, I didn't want to. If it's a problem for you please don't trouble yourself and don't get annoyed, just scroll on passed and don't answer to any of it. Thank you

Why is it any more annoying than four threads by four different posters?

NeckolasCage · 23/10/2024 08:59

Xavier is your best choice by a mile. Austin is a bit depressing and clunky.

Much better to put them all in one thread as people can see what your general thoughts are. So like I said, Xavier stands out by mile, lovely name.

LuluBlakey1 · 23/10/2024 08:59

He'll be called Ossy.

BunnyLake · 23/10/2024 09:08

Perfectly nice name. I prefer the Austin spelling.

Ostin just made me think of ostrich.
