Thoughts on the name Austin/Ostin. We live in the UK and are a mixed race family (if that makes a difference). Please be really honest.

My understanding is Ostin is the French spelling of Austin.

It isn't. It would be Os-ta(n).

Austin is OK but you'll get it said as Au-stin and Os-tin depending on regional accent.

Ostin looks like you can't spell.

I’m pretty fussy with names and can’t stand most of the ones suggested on name threads but I really don’t see anything wrong with Austin. It’s a pretty inoffensive name that won’t be a target for ridicule, doesn’t reflect negatively on the parents and is easy to pronounce.

Agreed! Austin isn't my favourite name, but it's completely normal, fairly popular, probably 1 or 2 in every nursery and school.

Looking at all the threads from the OP, I think they are considering Austin, Augustus, Henley, Hedley and Xavier?

I'd probably go for Xavier, but prefer Xander. Or Alexander, Axel, Zachary or Felix for names with a similar feel.

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/10/2024 09:58

Austin Powers. But I’m quite old.

MilletOver · 23/10/2024 10:01

Austin - yes
Ostin - no

Thank you. We also like Zachariah which is similar to Zachary.

@Iwouldliketogoonholiday Zachariah is a pretty awesome name but he will end up as Zac or Zaccy fairly quickly (although Zac is fine as a name).
If you are ok with Zac then I think Zachariah is nicer than Austin.

shoopshoopdedoo · 23/10/2024 11:13

Not keen on Austin personally, but it’s a totally acceptable name.

Ostin looks made up, even if it isn’t.

user2848502016 · 23/10/2024 11:33

Austin is fine (but does make me think Austin Powers, but probably that's because I'm old!)

Ostin is a bit weird and he'll spend his life correcting spelling when people inevitably spell his name Austin!

Firsttimebabymummy · 23/10/2024 12:02

I just think of Austin Powers

okydokethen · 23/10/2024 12:25

Austin is good

Wn38475 · 23/10/2024 12:34

Sorry to say this but, Ostin looks odd. It will raise eyebrows in the UK, rightly or wrongly and that's just not something you want to get into, if you can avoid it - which you can, but not using it.

Austin - the spelling is OK, but it does make me think of the car or the place in Texas. I don't think it's particularly bad, but I don't think it's particularly good either.

If you split your time between here and France, then I would go for a name that works really well and easily in both languages: Victor, Paul, Pascal, Nicholas etc.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 23/10/2024 17:14

I like Austin. Not seen the ostin spelling before but definitely prefer Austin.

Sorry but Austin just makes me think of a car, and I have never heard or seen the name Ostin so would pity any child called that.

I love it baby!

I like Austin. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it as a name. Go with what you like.

MrsW9 · 23/10/2024 18:19

Austin is nice. It's an English (medieval?) contracted form of 'Augustine', so actually sort of connects with your previous suggestion of 'Augustus' (which I wasn't keen on, because of the association with the Roman emperor, who was not entirely great and is also a big character to be saddled with).

Mercedes is a name and Portia (different spelling but same pronunciation for some). And Minnie.

A lot of the car companies including Austin are named after people (either first name or surname)

ScabbyHorse · 24/10/2024 16:27

My friend's son is called Austin but everyone calls him Ozzy. He's named after the car. Ozzy makes me think of Ozzy Osbourne

Just call your child spammer and be done with all the threads.

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 24/10/2024 16:32

I really love the name Austin but it was sadly vetoed by DH! Easy to pronounce and well known but not too common. Cute nicknames as well like Aus or Ozzy.

Obv same applies to Ostin but that spelling just looks wrong and silly even if it is an actual name.

Iwouldliketogoonholiday · 23/10/2024 08:46

French ancestry and mine and my daughter's names are of french origin.

My children ended up with Greek origin names, we arent greek but they are well known, normal names in the uk. I don't think happening to have French origin names yourself should mean you burden the next child with a dodgy spelling.

Oh ffs it's you again. Why do you keep posting new threads with dodgy names? You know you can make one thread and add a poll for every name you like.

Are you ok??? Do you not see that this thread is from yesterday and I haven't posted anymore new ones! You commenting rubbish is ironically keeping the thread live and active. Go and find something else to do weirdo!

Get a hobby and come off the internet! If a couple of threads on Mumsnet is bothering you so much you don't have enough to occupy your time which is quite sad.

As you seem to be an expert on Mumsnet you will know that by you commenting rubbish is ironically helping to keep the the tread from yesterday active!!

If you like like the posts scroll passed them, it's quite simple! You are a joker 😂 so silly
