I don't like any of them, but particularly dislike Hendrix /Hendrick

kezzykicks · 22/10/2024 07:37

Emmeline was on my list - love it and the nickname Emmie is cute.

I have never heard of Islie but I like the sound of it. May get confused with Isla which is very popular.

Raininginparadise2 · 22/10/2024 07:40

Only like Emmeline from your list.

Catandsquirrel · 22/10/2024 07:54

Emmeline is nice

Saffiya is a beautiful name but it's very closely associated with Islam. Not too say you can't use it but if you're not Muslim (you don't mention being) I'm not sure I'd be casually adding such a well known name from another culture to my list.

Boys, what do you like about Hendrick? Hendrix is hugely associated (for first names) with Jimi. Are you a fan? It's bit naff to use such a famous association if not.

What are your tastes as you seem to be at the very early planning stages. In terms of sounds, associations, anything.

Mumsees · 22/10/2024 08:17

Emmeline, it's a beautiful name. I have a friend named Emmeline known as Emmie.

When I named my DCs I had a rule that the name had to be easily pronounced, spelt and that neither my child nor I would have to waste time explaining how it was pronounced or spelt. I feel you may encounter this problem with some of the other names but, of course, you do what you prefer.

Atishooo · 22/10/2024 09:51

Nevaeh is just fucking awful. And always followed with ‘it’s heaven backwards. We know.

Hendricks is just weird as a name to me. It’s hard sounding, It’s a gin.

Islie is cute, is it made up?

The only Emmeline I know hates it and goes by Emma.

Waboofoo · 22/10/2024 09:52

I love Emmeline. Beautiful name

Waboofoo · 22/10/2024 09:55

Pronounced Emma-Leen

showersandflowers · 22/10/2024 10:04

@LouCritt at the moment we just have Artemis, Aramis and I like Atlas but my husbands has hard noped that one. Oh and also Midas! But we have so many other lists to look through. My husband plays a lot of games so we're going to look through lists of character names and I'm going to look through names from books I like/liked growing up. There has to be something!!!

You can’t call your kid Midas! He will forever be tormented by stupid quips asking if he has the Midas touch. Don’t do it!

FayCarew · 22/10/2024 10:46

Islie - I's spell it Isley like the surname. It looks a bit like it would rhyme with Wisley, so I'd probably choose something else. Miley or Kylie?
Emmeline - I prefer Emma and Emily
Safia - Safiya is nice
Neveah - No

Hendrick - gin. Hendrix, Henry, Hendry or Henrik? Gordon? Tanqueray?

showersandflowers · 22/10/2024 11:45

@Waboofoo yeah that's why it sort of came after because we really like the count but yes, it's been affected by that. Saying that, we have a friend who makes documentaries who is very successful on a small scale in his community called Midas and it really works for him! It's an annoying one.

BobbyBiscuits · 22/10/2024 11:47

Hendrick, maybe Hendrix! Too rock n roll perhaps.
Islie- not mad on that, what about Azelie?
Not a fan of Nevaeh...how do you even pronounce it?
The others are OK.

ilikeeggs · 22/10/2024 06:14

Love Emmeline but really dislike the others sorry.

Same answer.

LightBulbMome · 22/10/2024 11:52

Hadrian? Bit like Hendrick but more classic.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 22/10/2024 11:56

I know someone with an Isla who they call Islie (eye-lee) - I really don't like it (Isla is a lovely name), for some reason Islie sounds really whiny when they call it out to her across the park or whatever.

Ineedanewsofa · 22/10/2024 11:56

For a boy, I’d say Nathaniel fits the bill, options for a little one (Nat, Natty) but also for an older lad (Nate) as well as feeling like a ‘proper’ name in it’s full format just in case future child becomes Prime Minister or something.

Catandsquirrel · 22/10/2024 12:23

Aramis is an old man's overpowering aftershave and King Midas came a cropper.

Atlas, what if he's a bit on the weedy side?

NooNakedJacuzziness · 22/10/2024 12:28

While Islie sounds pretty she would have a lifetime of explaining how to pronounce/spell it

AspiringChatBot · 22/10/2024 12:30

With Neveah, did you mean Nevaeh, as in heaven backwards? If so it’s a name that started as a joke on the internet and so gets the piss taken out of frequently.

This isn't correct; "Nevaeh" (neh-VY-uh) was popularised by Sonny Sandoval, lead singer of the Christian rap band POD (Payable on Death) who used it for his daughter in 2000. At the time there was a popular TV program called "MTV Cribs" featuring celebrities talking about their babies and he was featured, so his explanation of the baby's name was widely publicised. (His other daughter is apparently Marley Keziah). There are Nevaehs documented prior to 2000, but that's when it really took off.

The US Social Security Administration publishes records of the top 1000 names recorded for babies of each sex each year; Nevaeh made that list for the first time in 2001 at #226 and then peaked at #25 in 2010; in 2023 it was #118. Neveah (neh-VEE-uh) was in the top 1000 from 2005 to 2014 but peaked at 882 in 2010. (Neveah may be a misspelling of Nevaeh in some cases but is more likely "inspired by" Nevaeh or a mixture of Nevaeh with names like Leah/Lia, Malia, Mia, Gia, etc. which were also popular at the time.)

I'm in the US and my 15yo has both a Nevaeh (Nev) and a Neveah (Veah/Vee) in his year at school. I wouldn't use either, personally, and suspect that both names are/will be associated with a specific time period - but "Nevaeh" in particular has had a surprisingly good run! Obviously there are big cultural differences, but I was surprised to see that Navaeh was ranked #105 for girls names in England and Wales in 2022 (and Neveah at #1501).

shoopshoopdedoo · 22/10/2024 15:46

I don’t love any of them, but think Emmeline would be my pick.

@showersandflowers Artemis is predominantly a Greek girls name, after the goddess. The male version is pronounced more like Artemas.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 22/10/2024 16:04

I like Emmeline and Hendrick (not Hendrix) but not keen on the others, especially Nevaeh, but I see you've removed that one!

mathanxiety · 22/10/2024 16:07

I like all the names except Nevaeh.
I'd spell Islie 'Eily' though. Assuming it's pronounced eye-lee.

For boys -
Austin
Marlowe
Harris
Beckett
Everett
Ivo
Anderson

Chypre · 22/10/2024 16:07

If you want the "heavenly" name go with Celeste (as in celestial), but don't do Nevaeh....

NotUnderMyUmbrella · 22/10/2024 16:21

Hendrick is great, so much better than Hendrix.
