Jonathan is very versatile.
Jo/Joe/Nate/Nathan/Jon/John/Johnny/Jonnnie etc
I named my boy Johnny, and have always regretted not giving him the options allowed by Jonathan.
In the event, we mostly call him John. I'm used to it, but am aware that it's considered old fashioned.

I think Jonathan is ultra-wet, and I have literally never heard a Jonathan be abbreviated to Nate or Nathan. I think you made a better choice. If you prefer it, you can remove the silent 'h' in John to make it Jon...

toastofthetown · 21/10/2024 15:30

I much prefer John to Jonathan. It’s a name which is perfect in its simplicity for me.

shoopshoopdedoo · 21/10/2024 15:30

I really like John. Don’t like Jonathan at all, so I wouldn’t say you missed a trick!

DancingGerbil · 21/10/2024 15:30

OH is called Jonathan and everyone calls him Jon.

Lellamir · 21/10/2024 15:34

It was when I was filling out a reference form, that I realised Jonathan was, literally Jo Nathan, and I kicked myself.

Honestly never met a Jonathan who goes by anything other than some variation of John. Nobody uses the Nate/Nathan part. Every other nickname you said can be used by Johnny easily!!

Itwasntme25 · 21/10/2024 18:53

Would very called Jono where I live.

Itwasntme25 · 21/10/2024 18:54

Be not very

rainydaysandrainbows · 21/10/2024 18:55

I think it's a great, classic name

wafflesmgee · 21/10/2024 18:56

I know a johnathan who goes by Ethan, one who calls himself Jono
I like it

TeamPolin · 21/10/2024 19:00

John is far nicer IMO. Simple. Classic.

I agree with PP Jonathan who thought Jonathan sounded wet....

Farmgoose · 21/10/2024 19:02

Johnny/John is perfect already. Jonathan is nice but John is better.

KirstenBlest · 21/10/2024 19:02

At least he won't get people spelling his name as Johnathan or Jonathon.

John and Johnny are both really nice.

I know a few Nathans and none of them get called Nat or Nate. Most of the Jonathans I know are Jon, but I know a Jonny and a Jonty.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 21/10/2024 21:14

John is so classic and underused now, so imo no need to “kick yourself”/regret at all -like you said, Johnny can easily shorten his name to the more serious/formal John.

While I don’t dislike Jonathan, Johnny is very cool sounding and John has such amazing historical namesakes so it would be no contest for me (although I probably would have done it the traditional way around with given name John, nn Johnny but that’s by the by).

Manchesterbythesea · 21/10/2024 21:24

Ds11 has a Jonathan friend. He goes by John or Johnno. Johnny is great!

LynetteScavo · 21/10/2024 23:43

The only Jonathan I know is called Jon. I actually really like the name Jonathan. It's a good solid name, like Benjamin.

Teawaster · 21/10/2024 23:52

I have a Jonathan but we call him Jonny. I don't know why you would shorten Jonathan to Johnny. That seems to me to be a version of John not Jonathan.
