I really love it.
Is it the pregnancy hormones? Or is it as great as I think it is?

If you're a certain age, you might recognise this film.

(Younger readers, this character is called Duckie).

The OP isn't coming back. Years ago a student acquaintance said she really believed that people should have to sit exams before being allowed to procreate. I thought at the time it was a harsh attitude. Then I see stupid ideas like this and think, maybe she had a point after all. I know in some countries a Registrar can refuse some names. Duckie is just so stupid and ctuel.

Actually I'm right here watching my dreams get squandered.
Yours was the most unkind comment so thought I'd pop up and say hello.

I suppose I can surmise that Duckie is a silly idea. Genuinely wondered if people might think it's cute - obviously my family and close friends hated it but wondered if I'd just not polled a wide enough circle. But I hear you loud and clear. Quack - over and out x

There's been some corkers on here over the years. More recently Radeon if my memory serves me correctly and Jimberley.
Duckie rhyming fun: suckie, fuckie, mucky, nookie. It would be a bullies dream.

Thecomfortador · 04/10/2024 20:10

Yes sure, I called my son Pickle. Stopped when he was about 2.5, mind, but it worked well for him up to then.

I love Jimberley!

For someone else's child, obviously 🤣

Holy shit, NO!!

simonsayss · 04/10/2024 20:14

OP, turn off pretty in pink

MrsSunshine2b · 04/10/2024 20:14

Can you imagine applying for a post as a solicitor, or a doctor, or any "serious" grown-up job with the name "Duckie"?

If you're a celebrity and your child has the option to fanny about in a creative field knowing the bills are paid if they never make it big, then you can call them something stupid.

I'm guessing that's not your position and your child is going to one day need to be taken seriously as an adult.

BabyImaDoRight · 04/10/2024 20:15

Ductavia is beautiful, with Duckie as a nickname.

Judellie · 04/10/2024 20:15

Maybe Dulcie instead?

I'm sure that you will come up with a great name for your child. It takes guts to come back to MN thread and admit your idea isn't so great after all. You have clearly demonstrated that you would have passed my student friends exam with flying colours. The ability to admit you were wrong is so valuable.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 04/10/2024 20:17

My grandmother called me Duckie as a nickname. I loved her calling me that. It is a great NM. But not I think as a “proper” name. I’ve heard worse though. Could just about stretch to a middle name if you really love it.

Fridayfunny · 04/10/2024 20:19

Back in 1980 when at school a mate decided her future kids would be called Fabian and Sherocko. We tried to dissuade her in the way that 17 year old do. Unfortunately we lost touch so I don't know if she followed through or not.

You obviously don't live anywhere near Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire. They call everybody duck and duckie there.

No. Just no.

LittleBobbyDazzler · 04/10/2024 20:22

I just think of the legend that is Dr. Donald Mallard.

No, use it as a nickname. I call my kiddo pickle but I, rightful, would have been laughed at and lambasted if I had have tried to call her that legally.

Can I call my child Duckie?
FuckThePoPo · 04/10/2024 20:22

ah Duckie Dale and Andie. What a great film!

AbbeyGrange · 04/10/2024 20:22

Come on OP, you must know it's a daft idea, it must be the hormones, imagine if you named the poor child "Duckie", I promise you you'll look back in 5 years and think "what the actual fuck made me think this was ok?"

Snippit · 04/10/2024 20:22

I live in Derbyshire where duckie is used all the time, as well as flower, iIs an endearing term we use 🤗

Batman37 · 04/10/2024 20:23

If you have a boy he can be Douglas so Dougie for short - sounds the same

TerrifiedandWorried · 04/10/2024 20:24

I was so convinced I had thought of a really good baby name. Couldn't work out why everyone kept looking at me strangely when I suggested it. It was actually my mother in laws name and I hadn't noticed.

viques · 04/10/2024 20:24

NoraLuka · 04/10/2024 18:55

There was a character called Ducky in NCIS. He was fictional though, and it was a nickname.

And duckface in four weddings and a funeral. Imagine if a child had a prominent nose and chin like Tarantino, Duckie would be very cruel.

Yes and that's fine, but to actually put Duckie on the birth certificate? Err no!

Oh god Dora duck!!!! Not dick

I’m not sure Dora Dick is any worse than Duckie tbh

Sia8899 · 04/10/2024 20:25

This reminds me of when I wanted to call my cat Baby and my sister talked me out of it. I was 23 😂. Always good to get opinions before you settle on a cute/silly/unusual name!
