Wanda or Rebecca?

What do you think of these names? Are they awfully old-fashioned? I am not from the UK and often struggle all cultural or social connotations surrounding names.
Am I right that people would probably use Becky instead or Rebecca?

Becky or Rebecca. Not wanda

MrsSunshine2b · 02/10/2024 17:39

I think Wanda is really cute. Old-fashioned names are really fashionable right now.

MrsMitford3 · 02/10/2024 17:41

Oh I rarely say no to a name but Wanda is awful.

Rebecca lovely.

They are very different vibes @Epli

Dragonsandcats · 02/10/2024 17:42

Rebecca is nice, Wanda is awful!

Scutterbug · 02/10/2024 17:42

Like Rebecca, no to Wanda.

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 02/10/2024 17:42

Wanda is awful and old fashioned. Rebecca is fine.

yeesh · 02/10/2024 17:42

Wanda is awful. Most people I know named Rebecca go by Bec or Bex

Epli · 02/10/2024 17:44

Thank you! I was expecting Wanda not to be liked. My friends from Poland hate it as well. I really like Rebecca but hate Bec/Becky?

What about Veronica? Is it also considered very old fashioned in the UK?

You might like Verity. It means truth. Sometimes you will see veritas written on things that are trying to be very serious and proper.

RoundAgain · 02/10/2024 17:47

I think Wanda may have been a fish in a disney film or something. It's not great for getting credibility.

RoundAgain · 02/10/2024 17:48

Oh, I googled and there is a film called "A fish called Wanda". I have no idea what it's about.

modgepodge · 02/10/2024 17:50

Ooh yes I rarely comment on names but I have to say I’ve never come across a wanda in England of any age. Sounds quite American to me? Maybe more common there. I have to say I’m not a fan! Same with Veronica, very unusual in this country.

Rebecca is fine, probably more common amongst women in their 30s/40s than little girls but perfectly acceptable name. Nicknames would be bec, bex, Becky, becca. It will almost certainly be shortened so don’t use it if that bothers you.

Rowansiskin · 02/10/2024 17:54

Rhonda rather than Wanda?

MrsSunshine2b · 02/10/2024 17:55

Veronica isn't old-fashioned enough, so everyone knows a middle aged Veronica and it's associated with that.

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 02/10/2024 17:55

Not a fan of Wanda but Becky as a nn is just as awful

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 02/10/2024 17:56

Veronica is the best

EdgeOfSixty · 02/10/2024 17:57

Rebecca is a classic name and will not date.
Wanda is not classic and never will be. Make me think of the film.

Anisty · 02/10/2024 17:58

Rebecca is a gorgeous name. Wanda not so much.

Short forms Becky, Becca or Bex

Anisty · 02/10/2024 17:58

Or Rebbie

ihatecoffee · 02/10/2024 17:59

Reba?

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 02/10/2024 17:59

Rebecca definitely! I'm biased as I have one. Great name, lots of variations and not too popular but not too unusual either.
Mine likes to be called Rebecca or Becx. Not too keen on Becky.

Anisty · 02/10/2024 18:01

Try Rachel for a name with similar connotations but short form Rache might be more acceptable for you? Or Sarah - Sairy.

Putonyourredshoesanddancetheblues · 02/10/2024 18:01

I know a Wanda, she is quirky and cool so totally suits her name! She is in her sixties I think.

@RoundAgain are you terribly young?

Waterboatlass · 02/10/2024 18:01

Veronica all the way!!

Wanda, it's useable if you love it. I just don't like the sound. I'd say more American than British.

Rebecca is fine but yes, it's likely to be shortened. I've met some Rebeccas, full name. it tends to become Becca or Becks if not Becky.
