Help to name little boy

Dottodotty · 02/10/2024 15:28

Little boy arrived 4 days ago, have a short list of names but struggling to get the final one nailed. Already have a little boy called Toby. What's everyone's thoughts?

  • Finn
  • Ted
  • Dylan

Don't want something mega popular if possible. Although I know most of those are top 20. Just not sure what that means in reality of number of boys with those names in class etc. Surname is Campbell.

I like all of them but voted for Dylan.

The school I would in has quite a few called Finley/ Finn. Personally I would use Ted as a nickname but not the actual name.

CherryValley5 · 02/10/2024 15:33

Love Finn! I actually know a Finn Campbell - he really suits it and the combination works well

toastofthetown · 02/10/2024 15:33

Congratulations! I voted Finn. All things being equal, I’d avoid alliterative names for siblings, and I don’t love Dylan.

Have found boys names so difficult, we should have chosen before so want to introduce him to the world but would rather do so with a name sorted. Fingers crossed we can get one picked soon. Do you think a nickname as a name would be a problem?

Same here.

Mumofgirls2017 · 02/10/2024 17:07

I like Ted best but Finn with Toby

BibbityBobbityToo · 02/10/2024 17:10

I voted Dylan as I love that, I don't think Toby Ted works as a pairing though, makes me think of a child's favourite Teddy Bear.

BibbityBobbityToo · 02/10/2024 17:11

And, just want to throw in "Brodie" my absolute favourite that isn't on your list but would be fantastic with your surname.

ButterAsADip · 02/10/2024 17:13

Definitely Dylan for me! I like them all but know swarms of Finns, a fair few Teddys and only one Dylan. I think they’re all nice friendly cool names :)

Monkeysatonthewall · 02/10/2024 17:15

Modern family ruined Dylan for me, voted for Finn 😊

caitlinsjoy · 02/10/2024 17:15

Are you pronouncing Dylan correctly? If not, Finn.

ThatFlightyTemptress · 02/10/2024 17:15

Toby and Ted sounds like a kid’s tv show…so Toby and Finn.

stickybear · 02/10/2024 17:25

I love all three, but there are so many Finns and Teds around so I would go with Dylan

Why do you think there are lots of Ted's. Do people use it as a shortened version of Edward and Theodore. I would have thought Teddy was a more popular nickname but I may be out of touch with current names in playground

I prefer Toby and Dylan or
Toby and Finn
I would avoid Ted with Toby as it sounds like a children's TV show.

Look up Finn and Finley (and Fionn, Finlay, Findlay, Finnan, Fintan, Finbarr ...)
Look up Ted, Teddy, Theodore and Edward.

I don't like Dylan unless it's the Welsh pronunciation (which was massively popular in the 1960s and1970s)

StampOnTheGround · 02/10/2024 18:42

Love both Finn and Dylan - either would be a great choice with Toby!

Not a massive fan of Ted.

KirstenBlest · 02/10/2024 18:45

Most of the Teddys will probably be Ted when they're older.

I like Finn.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 02/10/2024 18:50

They're all nice names. I'd go with Dylan - Ted is lovely but I'd avoid the same initial.

shoopshoopdedoo · 02/10/2024 20:25

I like them all but would choose Finn, followed by Dylan. I think Toby and Ted together is maybe a bit twee, plus would only personally use Ted as a nickname for Edward/Theodore.

Interesting that people are saying they know loads of Finn’s - my kids are pre-school age and I’ve only come across one Finlay, and no Finn/Dylans. Every other baby boy is Teddy or Freddie though!

RuthW · 02/10/2024 20:25

Dylan is nice.

Others are too short for me

MsBaggins · 02/10/2024 20:55

Finn 100%

Was always on my list if we had another boy

Moreteaandchocolate · 02/10/2024 22:34

I really like all 3 names! I voted for Dylan because it’s the lowest popularity.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 02/10/2024 22:54

Of the 3 Dylan without a doubt. Like Toby it’s been in the Top 100 for a least 30 years - and has mostly had steady use so is unlikely to date badly. Ted and Finn have rocketed up the charts in comparison- even if you don’t know any now, you likely will in future. And also bear in mind (as others have mentioned) Ted might not look as popular in the stats yet, but a fair number of Edward’s, Theodore’s and Teddy’s will be known as Ted (it’s the new cool retro diminutive for boys).

bakewellbride · 02/10/2024 23:03

All are lovely and we were going to call our daughter Toby if she'd have been a boy so good taste 😁

Other names in the same vain:
Leo
Owen
Luke
Jamie
