Is Mark just not ready for a comeback yet? DH and I both like it but I haven't met a baby Mark before! Putting me off slightly.

There's a running joke that Mark is the ultimate lazy choice for a boys name because it's not even a name, it's just a mark

PuddledDuck · 29/09/2024 09:19

Go for it, it’s refreshing and suits any age for me.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 29/09/2024 09:19

Not sure it’s due a comeback quite yet. Marcus?

Moonshiners · 29/09/2024 09:20

I'm afraid I've always thought this was a bad name. Just a little Mark.

Needanewname42 · 29/09/2024 09:21

Go for it. It's a classic biblical name. Not dated at all it's up there with Adam, Noah, Luke, James, Peter and Mathew

Vintagevixen · 29/09/2024 09:24

I like it - it's my brothers middle name as my mum is Cornish, and it's apparently a Cornish name.

Oganesson118 · 29/09/2024 09:25

Go for it. It’s a lovely name. Can I see it making a huge comeback soon? No, but I don’t think that matters. I’d rather see a little Mark or Peter than yet another Teddy or Jaxon!

BettyBardMacDonald · 29/09/2024 09:28

I love the name. It's timeless.

BoleynMemories13 · 29/09/2024 09:30

It's totally your choice. Personally I do find it a little bit bland (up there with John and Paul) and it's definitely not popular these days, but that doesn't make it unusable. It's a biblical classic, just like the other two I mentioned, and I don't think they'll ever go out of usage completely because of this.

I do actually know of a 8 year old Mark, named as a tribute to his grandad who passed before he was born. It suits him.

If you do want something which fits modern trends slightly more, I think Marcus is more in use these days than just Mark. However, as I said, Mark is fine if that's what you love. I would always prefer to hear a traditional classic over something outlandish, made up simply to be different.

CottonPyjamas · 29/09/2024 09:31

There's a teenage Mark in my family. It's timeless and not overused. He's a lovely lad, so I only have good associations with the name.

TeamPolin · 29/09/2024 09:38

Makes a refreshing change tbh.

sel2223 · 29/09/2024 09:43

I'm not sure it ever disappeared enough to warrant a 'comeback'....

I'm surrounded by 'Marks' of all ages (youngest 6 and oldest late 50's)

BettyBardMacDonald · 29/09/2024 10:08

It's a good dignified name, too. As an adult in the working world he'll be grateful to not be a Teddy/Rusty/Jazzi/Olly etc.

ButterAsADip · 29/09/2024 10:13

DS age 9 has a friend called Mark, he’s from a different country though. There’s also a Derek and an Ian and I know 2 tiny Desmonds. Oh and a couple of Davids.

Maybe the pool of boys name is just so small that these come back more readily than, say, Patricia or Beverley.

I do like Mark though, it’s very neutral and would suit anyone.

Moreteaandchocolate · 29/09/2024 10:14

I prefer the similar classics Matthew, Luke, John, Adam etc..(love these), but Mark is definitely a refreshing change and well-known, simple and classic - all great features for a name!

MrsMoastyToasty · 29/09/2024 10:17

It's a lovely biblical name. It's also very international- Marc, Marco etc.

NorthWestWise · 29/09/2024 10:17

I find it a bit dull, though influenced by the fact that half the men I know between late 40s and early 50s are called Mark. But known by nicknames, because they’re all called Mark.

Whereas, oddly, Marcus is not dull.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 29/09/2024 10:19

Love it. What a strong, classic name.

Oneandaquarter · 29/09/2024 10:23

It is dated , just as Noah, Elijah and Ezra are, and they are biblical names too. It isn’t a bad name though.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 29/09/2024 10:23

I think it would be very unusual these days, (surrounded by Connor's, Oliver's, Noah's etc) but I much prefer the 'Marc' spelling visually.

TheQuietestSpace · 29/09/2024 10:23

Not ready yet. A family member has just had a baby Mark and I think they'd have had the piss taken out of them (mostly behind their back but a lot of 'Mark? Really?') less if they'd gone for Apple or something! Rest of the kids all have classic names so not that it doesn't fit but just isn't ready for a comeback at all.

Tessiebeare · 29/09/2024 10:24

Go for it. It’s a name that won’t embarrass him in any profession, is recognisable and easy to spell but very unusual in that age group so will be a nice change and it’s very unlikely there will be another in the same class etc.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 29/09/2024 10:25

I like Mark. Not so much Marcus, don't try and modernise for the sake of it.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 29/09/2024 10:26

I like it - it's a good strong bible name. There were loads of Marks in my year at school, and around where I lived. There was Top Mark, Marky Mark, Skid Mark (known as Skiddy) and many more. There would probably be only one little Mark now (although Marcus/Markus seems popular).

MelodyMalone · 29/09/2024 10:28

I'd definitely go for Mark over the trendier Marcus.
