Mark for a boy?

Is Mark just not ready for a comeback yet? DH and I both like it but I haven't met a baby Mark before! Putting me off slightly.

It's just a dull name

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 29/09/2024 10:37

Not my favourite name ever, but it's a good, classic name and if you both love it, I don't think you should worry at all about whether it's due for a comeback. Who cares?

Flyaway08 · 29/09/2024 10:42

Thanks for the replies! Mostly positive :)

I understand why people would think it's dull. There's not much to it, but that's what I like about it!

Marc does look nicer. Something to think about.

I love the name Mark. Go for it.

RuthW · 29/09/2024 10:52

If you like it, go for it. It's a perfectly reasonable name. Not to my choice as too short, but better than lots I've heard recently.

Lidlisthebusiness · 29/09/2024 10:59

Absolutely not a name that should be bought back at all, nevermind now. My husband is a Mark, in his late 40's, and even he goes by a nickname rather than his actual name.

toastofthetown · 29/09/2024 11:07

I find Mark dull and dated. It’s been dropping in popularity since the seventies and doesn’t sound nice to me. One of those where I I think “of all the boys names which exist, how was Mark your favourite?”. It’s not a name ready for revival, because it’s just not a name which is appealing to to most parents naming babies. Mark probably has another generation to go before it takes off, and baby groups are full of Pauls, Stephens, Andrews and Marks.

That’s not the same as unusable though. Baby Mark born in 2024/25 is fine and there’s still a steady number born. A lot of people might assume he’s named after someone and you’ll probably get a lot of comments like ‘you don’t meet many baby Marks any more’ but that’s not a bad thing.

tealandteal · 29/09/2024 11:12

I have a little Mark and it suits him really well. He is 7 now and suited him as baby Mark, toddler Mark and now as a school aged child. There are lots of unusual names in his class and more traditional Arthur, Jacob etc. For a more unusual alternative consider Bark which was his choice for a baby brother 😂

MelodyMalone · 29/09/2024 11:13

241st most popular boys' name in England and Wales in 2023, if that's of any interest!

FloralGums · 29/09/2024 11:15

I like it. We have one Mark at the primary school where I work.
Mark, Matthew, Luke, Jason, David, John, James, Geoff, Michael - all great, strong classic names.

AppleKatie · 29/09/2024 11:16

If you like it great but I do find it quite dull.

its not offensive but I can’t think of many positive associations either, skid mark, no mark etc….

HowFarToBanburyCross · 29/09/2024 11:21

I really like it. One simple, solid beat in a sea of more trendy multisyllabic names (many of which are also very nice - that's not a dig at anyone.)
I have a Luke and we got a bit of side-eye about it being a bit bland, especially as our other DS has a more unusual name. But I love it and it suits him, and I'm glad we didn't go for Lucas or Luca, which were popular when he was born.
I don't think Mark is about to "come back", and I see that as a point in favour of any name!

JohnCravensNewsround · 29/09/2024 11:43

I'm of the age where there were lots of Marks. I don't think it has aged at all and it goes with most surnames. I'd say it was fine and quite cute.

Oganesson118 · 29/09/2024 11:46

I also fancied a lad called Mark for many years as a teenager so it's always been a good-looking person name to me.

Suz8 · 29/09/2024 11:53

I'm going to be honest Op (after seeing the thread about names they were glad they were talked out of/received honest FB on). We go for the in-laws' names as middle names and I'm glad none of our dads are called Mark. But having said that, if they were we'd still go for it. I can totally see a baby Mark though. I always go "Awww! Baby X!" when I'm introduced to a baby with an old school name which is becoming more and more common in baby groups. Maybe he could rock it. Go with what you love!

Yes I dated a very handsome Mark... he was 6ft 4 and very broad shouldered.

SunnieShine · 29/09/2024 12:19

I really like it.

greengreyblue · 29/09/2024 12:20

I love Mark. I am a 70s child and had a few Marks in my schools .Simple, classic, strong.

greengreyblue · 29/09/2024 12:26

Would certainly break up the glut of Arlos and Olivers at my school.

Sandybeaches5 · 29/09/2024 12:27

My Brother is Mark. late 50's, I really like the name too and there's hardly any that I know of below the age of 45.
Why choose one of the 'trendy' names that are about now days, when you could go for an unusual (and uncommon in this generation) classic name.

SingingSands · 29/09/2024 12:27

I know loads of Marks, but I'm 45 so have grown up with it being a popular name.

I've always thought it refreshing - simple, strong, goes well with almost any surname.

We have a young Marc in our family, but he's spent his entire life saying "Marc, with a c".

BobbyBiscuits · 29/09/2024 13:10

It's kind of boring I guess. It was very common in the 60s-70s and before that too. There's nothing wrong with it though. I guess I prefer Matthew or Luke, or Joseph if we're thinking biblical traditional.

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 29/09/2024 13:15

I have a relative with this name and unfortunately I do associate the name with people around his age (he’s 40), so I personally wouldn’t. I just can’t imagine a baby with that name. But then my son also has a name that is usually associated with that generation so I can’t really judge. If you love it then go for it.

Therunecaster · 29/09/2024 13:28

I have a 19 year old Mark and think it is a wonderful name!

MrsMouse03 · 29/09/2024 13:28

My 21 year old DS is Mark as we have an unusual surname so wanted a simple but classic first name .
