How would you pronounce Miro?

Someone suggested it for our boy. I’m just curious about whether most (English) people would pronounce it the same way as us.

We like it but not sure it’s the one. Trying it on to see if it’ll grow on us.

Rhymes with Biro.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 27/09/2024 15:49

I'd pronounce it to rhyme with biro the pen

FairyBatman · 27/09/2024 15:50

Miro rhymes with Biro ( I think it’s more likely to in the North) it’s also the name of a piece of visualisation software if that matters to you.

CurlewKate · 27/09/2024 16:14

@deliwoman1 " Biro is logical. But that isn't how the painter is said, so you'll definitely get both. I suppose it depends whether that bothers you or not.

I'm one of those saddos that finds it really interesting that people from the same country, speaking the same language can look at the same mix of letters and yet our brains pronounce it completely differently.

Is it Miro as in Biro, Giro, said similar to Milo

Or

Is it Miro as in Joan Miró, San Siro, Robert De Niro

Fascinating.

StolenChanel · 27/09/2024 16:22

My-ro

BobbyBiscuits · 27/09/2024 16:23

I'd pronounce it 'meer-oh' like the artist Victoria.
But I've not seen it before as a first name. Second guess would by 'my-row'.

My ro

I'm pretty sure that's a brand of toilet roll in Europe

DoNOTShakeItOff · 27/09/2024 16:30

she answers to all of them

Poor kid Confused She's now got a lifetime of correcting people and will almost certainly change it at 16. Take it from someone who knows! I have to correct the spelling of both my first & surname! Bloody sick of it

I think so too!

My brain just can’t compute how some people arrive at their pronunciations of certain names. It really is fascinating.

The only person I know who has changed their name was originally called Mary. I know many people with very unusual names! Veda is not that out of this world these days.

IntheVicinity · 27/09/2024 08:01

Like the artist Miró.

Same.

AutumnNymph · 27/09/2024 19:51

Me-row. It's a white boarding tool I use very often for work so won't name a child that. (Esp considering the number of times I swear at it)

rzb · 27/09/2024 19:54

My-row, to rhyme with Biro. And also because the long 'Mi' sound would be as in the name Miron.

Patienceinshortsupply · 27/09/2024 20:01

Me-uhr-ro.

We use a product at work called Miro and that's how the rep told us it was pronounced........

Natsku · 27/09/2024 20:04

I'd pronounce it with shorts vowels - mi with a short i, and ro with a short o. So not like meero or myro.

CharlotteBog · 27/09/2024 20:06

Like Miró the artist, so mi-ro

Mi as in mirror
Ro as in rot with a slight roll of the r if they didn't make me sound too wanky.

Where I live in Essex it would likely be
My-roh

My as in minor
Roh as is rose

Dazeandconfuse · 27/09/2024 20:06

I use Miro a lot for work and pronounce it to rhyme with biro. But for me, it would also be like naming a child Excel or Outlook.

If you don't know too many people with boring, made-up jobs like mine software-y jobs, the association might not bother you!

RuthW · 27/09/2024 20:10

My-ro

Blueberrymuffin8 · 27/09/2024 20:17

Me row

Mykittensmittens · 27/09/2024 20:21

it’s language rules…

Miró is pronounced mero due to the acute accent over the o. That changes the prior vowel sound from and eye to an eee. Without the accute accent it is biro as in b-eye-ro, particularly in the English language. The word biró is bee-ro. Your can’t compare to ‘miracle’ for example as the latter letters and vowels change the accent on the first vowel (see below example about ‘nice’).

Miro is m-eye-ro.

Miró is meero

Odd other rules to do with vowels and end sounds are like adding the E which changes the prior I. So Nic is ‘NIK’ but Nice is N-eye-se. That’s because adding the e changes the prior vowel pronunciation from an I to an ee.

(child of an English Language professor, so feel
free to ask me about pronunciation on names!!)

Yes agree

ODFOx · 27/09/2024 21:59

Mi Row
Not a long mee

But surely most people will read it as a variant of Miles, hence Myrow?
