How would you pronounce Miro?

Someone suggested it for our boy. I’m just curious about whether most (English) people would pronounce it the same way as us.

We like it but not sure it’s the one. Trying it on to see if it’ll grow on us.

Like mirror but without the r on the end.
It's the name of a reasonably popular piece of software, the above is how everyone at work pronounces it when talking about their Miro boards.

DragonInAmber · 27/09/2024 08:40

Myro as in Milo, bring only the one letter different

boysmuminherts · 27/09/2024 08:40

Meero definitely. Nice name.

Alicana · 27/09/2024 08:47

Miro boards are a popular online whiteboard, we use them a lot at work. Some people call them Meeroboards and some call them Myroboards!

Why would OP need to change the spelling when the majority of responses have said they would pronounce it the way she wants it?

My parents thought exactly like you and I've had a lifetime of having to correct people mispronouncing my name. It's incredibly annoying. I purposely spelt my children's names in a way that showed the pronunciation clearly.

Meero. Only know it as a surname as in Juan
Miro. Are you Spanish?

ButterAsADip · 27/09/2024 08:58

Like Robert De Niro but with an M

Personally I can't stand it when people change the spelling of a name for a 'simplified' phonetic Yooneek spelling....

and there's still the fact that more responses on here have said they would pronounce it exactly how it's meant to be pronounced rather than a different way, so, again, why would OP change the spelling if most people would pronounce it correctly anyway?

I've got a fairly unusual name, never bothers me if I have to correct someone's pronunciation or spell it out for them.

Seagullproofoldbag · 27/09/2024 09:03

I read it as Meero, definitely not Myro, even though I know a Milo. It must depend on your previous knowledge/exposure. I immediately thought of the artist.

Haroldwilson · 27/09/2024 09:04

I'd think you named your kid after the brainstorming platform software site thing.

Mee-row.

Go with Milo instead?

pinkdelight · 27/09/2024 09:06

Like zero.

I'd assume it's short for Miroslav.

That's what I thought too, definitely sounds east European.

Viviennemary · 27/09/2024 09:09

Not sure. I wouldn't know if it was m eye ro. Or Meero

Yes, that's a great example for those unfamiliar with the artist

This. There's also no consensus at work on how to pronounce it so I'd definitely avoid!

Good for you!! It irritates me a lot when people mispronounce my name. Not the first time they do it but when I correct them and then they repeatedly do it. Nothing to do with being unique. Glad to hear it doesn't bother you though.

Rizzo8 · 27/09/2024 09:44

Mee-row

Miro is a well known software with designers !

deliwoman1 · 27/09/2024 09:56

I didn’t know about the software, so thanks for that! My brother-in-law is an IT architect so he’ll probably have something to say about it 😂

I honestly would’ve thought Joan Miro (accent over the o but my phone refuses!) was famous enough for the meero pronunciation to stick in the minds of most people. His name is more Mih-roh though than meer-o

We use Miro too and everyone here pronounces it to rhyme with hero, not like Mirror-without-the-r.

CurlewKate · 27/09/2024 10:04

Isn't the artist more like the beginning of Mirror-with very short I- than the actor which is more like the beginning of Nearer, with a long I?

Yes, exactly. I think so. Maybe a little harder for some English accents.

I suspect many people have not heard of Joan Miró.

Pemba · 27/09/2024 10:20

I would have assumed Meer-oh. I must admit I've never heard of it before, sounds Japanese to me, like Hiro?
