Hello all,

Baby girl due in January.

I'm stuck on the name Ola at the moment. I know it’s Spanish for hello but I think it’s such a lovely name for a little girl.

what do you all think? If you could give me suggestions for middle names aswell that would be great!

Ola is very pretty - I haven’t heard it as a name before - does it link to your heritage? My only issue would be potential spelling / pronunciation explanations and confusion with Orla.

GoodVibesHere · 21/09/2024 08:19

People will assume you're saying Lola I think.

MissyB1 · 21/09/2024 08:33

Hmmm I think it will just confuse people. Orla would be better.

MeMyCatsAndI · 21/09/2024 08:39

It's a no from me. I'd assume you're trying to say her name is Lola.

Overthebow · 21/09/2024 08:41

It would probably be confused with Orla or Lola

pilates · 21/09/2024 08:53

Orla is better.

Haggia · 21/09/2024 08:55

Being pedantic, it’s actually Spanish for “wave” but obviously pronounced the same as “hola”.

Unless people take it similar to Ola Jordan - she pronounces hers O-lla doesn’t she.

Mumofgirls2017 · 22/09/2024 21:52

I know an Ola who is a surgeon 🤷‍♀️

Ola charlotte
ola isabelle
ola phoebe
ola wren
ola violet
ola penelope
ola marigold
ola grace
ola valentine
ola ruby
ola beatrix

JosieK8 · 23/09/2024 21:42

I know it exists in Arabic and there was an Egyptian tv series recently called Finding Ola…but in English it just doesn’t work for me sorry

espressomartinii · 23/09/2024 21:58

Ola is not Spanish for Hello. That's Hola. Ola means wave, as in ocean waves.

Ola is a boys name is some Scandinavian countries, a diminutive of Olaf. I'd go with Orla or Isla personally.

SingingSands · 23/09/2024 22:35

It's lovely! The only Ola I know is the dancer Ola Jordan. Easy to spell, easy to pronounce, not overly popular.

If you love it, go for it.

SkaneTos · 24/09/2024 22:28

I think Ola is cute name for a girl!

I'm Swedish, and in Sweden Ola is a male name. It is derived from Olav/Olof.
(I see now that a previous poster has already mentioned this).

It's Portuguese for hello.

I find it weird but that's because I speak Portuguese so I see it as hello no Ola. Taken as a standalone word it's quite pretty. Never heard it as a name though.

momtoboys · 24/09/2024 22:31

I think Ola and Orla are lovely.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 24/09/2024 22:32

I would think of Ola Jordan too. So it's quite familiar and I don't think it will be a problem, although people pronounced hers as both Olla and Oh-la.

Nannerli · 24/09/2024 22:35

pilates · 21/09/2024 08:53

Orla is better.

But it’s a completely different name. It only sounds vaguely similar if said in a non-rhotic accent.

Cecilly · 24/09/2024 22:35

Ola is an Arabic name. It's a beautiful name!

Not pronounced the same

No, but how can you tell- that’s what I mean.

espressomartinii · 25/09/2024 12:55

@miniaturepixieonacid I was correcting the OP, who said it was Spanish for Hello.

miniaturepixieonacid · 26/09/2024 00:13

@espressomartinii Yes, I know. But you and a couple of posters were saying it therefore means wave not hello. So I was just saying it does also mean hello but the OP just mixed the language up with another, very similar, language.

s3tut0y3r · 26/09/2024 00:30

What about Una?

wandawaves · 26/09/2024 00:35

I know an Ola, she is African.
I don't mind it.

The op hasn't said she's mixed the two languages up.

Portuguese for hello is olá. Quite different pronunciation than ola without the accent.
I like the name Ola, I would just have difficulty from the spelling with knowing if it was supposed to be Oh-la (long O) or O-lla (short O).
