Honest thoughts on Hazel and Rose

Hi all,

We like these two names (not together) but would like to know how they are received - I know it’s what we like that counts but I found it helpful in the past to use MN as a sounding board for a name as it revealed some connotations and unfortunate rhyming words we hadn’t considered!

I don’t love how popular Rose is but I also think it’s classic and timeless which appeals. But maybe it’s having a moment actually as it’s a common middle name. Hazel: I like the link to nature (not that it’s important we have that) and think it’s cute but also ages well.

If anyone has any other short (max two syllables) girl names you think we might also like I’d love to hear them! We clearly like a z sound going by these two names.

Thanks in advance!

Hazel is lovely.

Hazel is old and frumpy. Sorry.

Rose is nice but I much prefer Rosa.

Azalea is a lovely nature name and has a z.

I love them both. I'd go with Rosa over Rose. Absolutely love Hazel.

Hazel reminds me of the rabbit in Water ship Down. But it's fine as a name.
Rose is gorgeous - fabulous flower, everyone can spell it, timeless. Mind you, my mum was Rose and she hated it! Maybe because every birthday card and box of soap she was given had bloody roses on it!
If I could pick a flower name I'd choose Dahlia.

While I agree that Rose is pretty, it is simply too overused at the moment, there must be thousands of little Roses out there!
Other longer Rose names such as Rosemary or Rosamund will inevitably be shortened to Rose, so you still have that super popular problem.

I'm not at all keen on Hazel, with all the pretty names available, why would you name your child after a nut?
Have you considered Zelda or Zinnia since you like Z names?

RedOnyx · 20/09/2024 11:41

Tamsin and Lynsey also have the Z sound you like.

ODFOx · 20/09/2024 11:59

I think that both Rose and Hazel are lovely.
I also think that Heather is due a revival.

Am805463 · 20/09/2024 12:01

Hazel is quite nice and I prefer Rosa to Rose.
how about Tansy?

MyBigFatGreekSalad · 20/09/2024 18:51

Ooh I absolutely love hazel!

Rose is pretty but very common, especially for a middle name.

CheeseWisely · 20/09/2024 18:52

I also know a baby Hazel and it's lovely 🥰

SallyWD · 20/09/2024 19:49

I absolutely love Rose. Not so keen on Hazel. I don't think it has a pleasant sound.
