Hello all!

Recently found out I'm having a much wanted Baby Boy and although I'm so excited, we're struggling with names.

Me and OH disagree on a lot of names.

I'd like two syllable to flow with his sister's name.

We both love Austin but our second name starts with a 'P' and is also two syllable.

It just sounds too much like Austin Powers to me and I can't seem to get over it.

Am I being silly?

Hmm depends. Austin Powell - maybe too much for me too. Austin Parker - fine.

It's a nice, wearable name - I know two under 5 and it suits them both even though they are quite different!

BobbyBiscuits · 16/09/2024 10:22

I'm afraid I'm not a fan. It does remind me of Austin Powers, or those really old British cars. Austin Metro I think was one?
How about Ashton? Alex, Alistair, Aidan? If you like A names.

SirChenjins · 16/09/2024 10:24

No - Mr Powers has spoiled it forever for me. That and a thoroughly unpleasant woman locally whose son was called Austin but she insisted it was pronounced Ow-stin. It may well be in some countries, just not this one.

CrustyOldFrump · 16/09/2024 10:24

I have an Austin (secondary age now) and I don’t think anyone has ever called him Austin Powers or similar jokes. It’s not been a problem at all.

HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth · 16/09/2024 10:26

How about Oscar? Similar sound but without the association.

HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth · 16/09/2024 10:26

I do loveAustin though. Can nn Ozzy too ❤️

NotStayingIn · 16/09/2024 10:29

I love it!

MistyF · 16/09/2024 10:43

what about August? Austin is medieval short for for Augustine

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 16/09/2024 10:53

Why does this remind me of Ford Prefect in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy?
Austin Princess perhaps? 😁

SonicTheHodgeheg · 16/09/2024 10:55

Kids won’t have a clue who Austin Powers is so I wouldn’t worry unless your surname has Pow as the first syllable.

Alifemadelessordinary · 16/09/2024 11:08

Thanks everyone.

The 'A' name isn't the reason we love it, we both just really like it.

I have a huge family and lots of names have been used by very close relatives, so we're a bit restricted.

I like Oscar. DH doesn't.

Our surname doesn't start 'Pow' luckily so hopefully lots of others won't make the connection.

It's tough as my daughters name just came to us and I absolutely love it, so I'm worried about having a niggle at the back of my mind.

It really makes me think Austin Powers sorry, I wouldn't use it especially with a surname beginning in P.

How about these instead that have a similar sound:
Aiden
Archer
Asher
Alfred/Alfie
Albert/Albie
Archie

CatDogGuineaPig · 16/09/2024 12:06

We know an Austin in secondary school, I think he sometimes gets Austin, Texas but not Powers (the kids have no idea who that is). Aston is nice too.

KirstenBlest · 16/09/2024 13:06

I think Austin is fine. I know two.
The car brand was renamed Rover in the 1980s, I think might be a consideration when it comes to middle name and surname.

The Austin Powers connection wouldn't bother me unless the surname was something like Powell or Flower.

Austin Riley and Austin Healey spring to mind.

I don't like August as a name.

MerryMarys · 16/09/2024 17:58

Austin Powers for me too

Moreteaandchocolate · 16/09/2024 18:39

I don’t think the kids will know who Austin Powers is! It’s a good name - that sweet spot of well known but not overused.

SabrinaThwaite · 16/09/2024 20:01

Your daughter isn’t called Allegra or Marina by any chance?

KirstenBlest · 16/09/2024 20:17

Nah, she's called Princess or Seven. Smile

I think Austin is a great name!

It has many meanings (Austin, the capital city of Texas, the hit song about Austin from last year, the country song "Austin" [which is also about the city, kind of] and so on), but it is a great name in itself.

It does not make me think of Austin Powers, at all.

LittleGreenDuck · 17/09/2024 17:21

I have a teenage Austin and our surname begins with P, though sounds nothing like Powers. He's never had the Austin Powers reference brought up. Occasionally his name gets misheard as Oscar, but other than that no issues at all.

We do know another, younger Austin who goes by Ozzy, but mine never has.

readyforroundthree · 17/09/2024 18:39

I like it.
I've seen all of the Austin Power's films but really wouldn't have made the connection unless you said. If anything I think of Austin, Texas, but not in a bad way.
