Shortening of Caroline

I want to call a girl (if I have a girl) Caroline BUT I want it shortened to Caro. It's a common 18th century thing and I am really into the Georgians. BUT When I say it to people they think I am saying Carol. Which is my Mom's name btw. How can I avoid this?

I think a name also depends on the prevailing accent in the part of the country you are in.

In London/SE/Essex, "Carol" is pronounced "Car-OW", so you have more explaining to do in that part of the world using Caro. In Glasgow/Scotland, "Carol" would be "Caaarrol", so Caro might be easier?

pooka · 20/04/2008 16:21

My aunt is caroline but we all know her as Cally.

ClairePO · 20/04/2008 16:24

I would always shorten Caroline to Caro, I always thought Carol was a totally different name in its own right. The only friend I know that is a Caroline is always Caroline or rarely (when texting mostly) a Caro. I think it's a veyr pretty name.

WendyWeber · 20/04/2008 16:53

Oh, I like Callie - I seem to remember that as the name of the heroine in a book by Monica Dickens.

Caro does work when said in a terribly posh accent - round here though it would sound like Carraw (Lancs accent )

Squirdle · 20/04/2008 17:44

I also have a friend called Cali - shortened from Caroline.

AbbeyA · 21/04/2008 08:16

It is just as well that I didn't have a girl because I might have had Caroline and everyone seems to think that you have to shorten it. I don't see why you can't stick to the full version.

jammydodger · 21/04/2008 08:18

I know two Carolines who are known as Carrie, which is lovely I think.

oops!

Hersetta · 21/04/2008 14:03

I know two Carolines, one gets called Caro and the other Cazza.

jazzandh · 21/04/2008 15:24

My Mum's a Carolyn - she hates it and gets called Caroline - but nothing shorter! The only other Caroline I have come across was a Callie.

I think though if you shorten the name yourself, it will stick.

TheFallenMadonna · 21/04/2008 15:30

I know a Caro(line). She is v posh.

totalmisfit · 21/04/2008 15:41

i had friend called caroline who went absolutely mental when i called her 'caz' one day. it was scary

galletti · 21/04/2008 15:47

I'm a Carolyn, and known as Caz to close family & friends.

My ex boss (very posh) who I workded for for 16 years took it on himself to call me Caro, so then all my colleagues did.

I like both to be honest.

galletti · 21/04/2008 15:50

Ooh, just remembered, my mum and stepdad call me Cazzie (as did my dad). No wonder I am so confused - I have four names!

MrsMattie · 21/04/2008 17:01

Caro is a bit..urm..odd.

I know 2 Carolines. One is a Cally and one is a Caraz (said like Carrers)

ChicaLovesHerLocalGreengrocer · 21/04/2008 17:11

My sister is Caroline.

We (her family) never shortened her name when she was little, but sometimes used the pet names Carolina and Caro.

But at school as a teenager she got called Caz and Cazza. AFAIAW she introduces herself as Caroline.

I think it's a name that doesn't need a shortening. I love it as it is.

ellingwoman · 21/04/2008 17:14

You can't impose nicknames as someone has already said.

If you are going to shorten it from day one then register it as Caro. To me there's no point in a full name if it going to be shortened immediately by the parents.

I had a friend Caroline who was called Cack-Cack from day one at school by all her friends. You have been warned

I like Caroline called Caro. Very nice.

OofyProsser · 21/04/2008 17:34

Goodness, you don't often find my name on these threads!

My name has never been shortened. I do like Caro though.

Ceelo · 21/04/2008 20:46

I'm a Caroline and i was NEVER called "Caz / Cazza" until i lived up North and then that died a death too. People have hardly ever called me anything other than my full name. The only issue your daughter will have to look forward to is endlessly being called Carolyn instead. Don't know why but even my boss of 4 years calls me that still.

cherrylips · 21/04/2008 21:02

I know a Caro, my cousin, posh family, lovely beautiful girl. My Aunt and Uncle shortened Caroline to Caro and it stuck, everyone calls her Caro. I think its lovely!

MrsJohnCusack · 21/04/2008 21:27

my sister is Caroline, often called Caro

obv we are v.posh

oldcrock · 21/04/2008 21:32

I'm another one, my Dad always shortened it to "Carra". Not really posh, us!
