Thoughts on Ella? How many do you know?

I really like it and DH hasn’t said no , so technically the only name we’ve agreed on so far.
Is it a popular baby name where you are ? I know quite a few Bella’s at the moment but no Ella’s.

Loads - very popular name .

SkaneTos · 10/09/2024 12:23

Ella is a lovely name.

I know, or know about, three girls with the name Ella, but they are around 10-12 years old.

Olika · 10/09/2024 12:26

I have come across one Ella at a toddler group but that's it. Really like it.

boysmuminherts · 10/09/2024 12:32

I know 2 and they are 13 and 14. But then mine are teenagers. I don't know any babies atm. It's a nice name.

Atishooo · 10/09/2024 12:33

Loads and always paired with the obligatory filler name of Rose/May/Grace.

As a name itself I find it a bit nothingy tbh.

Tessiebeare · 10/09/2024 12:36

I only know one who is 9. There are none at any of the toddler groups we go to or in any of my older kids classes.

CocoPlum · 10/09/2024 12:37

I see a lot of newborn babies at work, don't often see an Ella. They tend to be tween/teens.

raspberryfizzer · 10/09/2024 12:37

Very common.

Beynac · 10/09/2024 12:40

I know one who is 16. And a 10 year old Ellie. I think it was very popular 10-15 years ago but not so much now.

newleafontheplantjohn · 10/09/2024 12:50

I know loads.

I agree with a pp that's it's a bit "nothingy"

Sounds like half a name to me; Daniella, Arabella, Isabella, Gabriella"

It's just the ending to so many names.

MistyF · 10/09/2024 12:51

I like the sound of it, but feel like it's bit dated and it kinda nothing-ly because it was crazy popular among utterly boring people. Plus, I find longer names prettier.

Moreteaandchocolate · 10/09/2024 12:54

I know one 8 year old Ella, and lots of Eleanor’s / Ellie’s of about 12/13. I think Eve / Evie / Eva names have taken over from Ella / Ellie type names in terms of popularity round me now.
I really like the name - it’s my favourite of the “El” names - classy, classic and simple.

FayCarew · 10/09/2024 12:56

Babies called Ella in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com)

I think you need to look at it in conjunction with Ellie. and all the El- and -ella names.

I only know one young Ella but it's short for something not covered by the previous sentence.
I know 3 adult Ellas (age 25+), lots of Ellies and Bellas.

bakewellbride · 10/09/2024 12:58

It's beautiful and I like it. Very popular. I wouldn't put it on the birth certificate though, it has nickname vibes to me.

anotherbaby3 · 10/09/2024 12:59

In my experience from running a shop that does personalised baby items.. it was mega popular about 3-5 years ago. I had an order for one this morning and actually thought to myself how I hadn’t done one in so long. I don’t think there are loads of baby Ella’s at the moment compared to a few years ago. I think the rise in popularity of other ‘E’ names like Etta and Ettie might be something to do with it

HRCsMumma · 10/09/2024 13:02

My lovely DSIL is Ella. Her full first and middle name is Ellery James Surname.

Really quite unusual and a lovely name with her middle name. She goes by Ella or Els. Early 20s.

Atishooo · 10/09/2024 12:33

I agree. It's not awful and a perfectly OK name but it's a bit meh.

FayCarew · 10/09/2024 13:15

Looking at the top names for 2022 (latest ONS data), she'll be at school with:
Isla
Ellie
Elsie
Isabella
Arabella
Isabelle
Annabelle
Elodie
Eleanor
Eloise
Ayla
Willow
Hallie
Millie
Eva
Ava
etc so it seems a bit samey.

It's nice enough but a bit bland.

CatamaranViper · 10/09/2024 13:18

Twas my grandma's name. She was 94 when she died about 5 years ago. Always loved the name

Catandsquirrel · 10/09/2024 13:19

Not awful by any means but just not very substantial or elegant to me, I'm afraid. For me personally it's just on the wrong side of simplicity (which may be to do with overexposure).

If you like it, please don't be put off but I wouldn't massively ask around as I think you'll get a lot of lukewarm responses thanks to recent popularity.

DramaAlpaca · 10/09/2024 13:22

I know loads, it's very common. It's also very bland. Pretty, but bland.

sel2223 · 10/09/2024 13:36

I can think of 3 off the top of my head - one is late 20's, the other two 6 or 7.

If you like it and you both agree on it then go for it, it's a lovely name.

CherryValley5 · 10/09/2024 13:38

I know absolutely loads - DD is 20 and there were 7 Ellas in her school year of 100 girls. That being said, it’s a gorgeous name and very classy. Simplistic in a nice way, I really love it! I wouldn’t hesitate to use it if I were you. I’d say it’s probably less common for babies being born nowadays so popularity wouldn’t concern me.

Firsttimebabymummy · 10/09/2024 14:08

I know of three. Around the ages of 6, 9 and 12.

Elyalbert · 10/09/2024 14:13

I know one - aged 19 - and I think it’s pretty popular. There’s generally a plethora of Ellie’s, Eleanors, Elodies, Elise’s etc. I like the name though.
