Hey all,

Baby No. 1 is due is 3 months and we are a greek family in the uk.

Baby is a boy and following strong Greek traditions he will be named after my husband's father, whose name is Evangelos and this will be our baby's boy first name at his birth certificate.

We are puzzling over how to call him on a day to day basis, introduce him to nursery etc.

Evan or Angelo?

Angelo is our preference, which is a very valid, elegant and common greek name and it goes well with our surname too, but I don't know if it would be ok for the uk?

On the other hand Evan is a valid UK name but sounds a bit foreign to our greek ears...

So, here is the question: Would Angelo be ok for a boy in the ok? Or shall we go for Evan?

Angelo is easy for brits to pronounce

HotCrossBunplease · 10/09/2024 11:55

Angelo is perfect.

I think that Adele’s son is called Angelo.

heldinadream · 10/09/2024 11:57

I think Angelo is really lovely. 😍

Moreteaandchocolate · 10/09/2024 12:56

I personally prefer Evan.

Jessieshome · 10/09/2024 14:00

Angelo! But that's mostly because Evan is a popular Welsh boys name where I am, so it's bit dull to me. I love Angelo!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 10/09/2024 14:45

both are nice names, I can see why you are struggling.

Angelo is fine imo if he has an obviously Greek surname and/or you live in a more multicultural area. Angelo Smith however sounds a bit odd and he might get possibly get teased with “Angela” if you live in a place where most kids have typically Top 50 “British” names. In which case go for Evan as it’s more widely used.

I know an Angelo (in uk) who gets called Angie as a nickname. It’s only those who know him well who use his nickname so never really any confusion re his sex, and it couldn’t suit him any more. It’s super cool

AmiablePedant · 10/09/2024 15:20

Evan may confuse the (background) issue because it is a Welsh/Scottish name in its own right!

theduchessofspork · 10/09/2024 15:36

Angelo is fine, Evan is obviously more familiar to UK ears - I'd go for Angelo if you prefer, and then if he wants to switch later he can

HotCrossBunplease · 10/09/2024 19:06

Evan is a bit weird because the pronunciation is not the same as when it is at the start of “Evangelos”- EH-van

but Eh-VAN- gelos.

That said, since it’s Greek would the “g” in Angelos not be a hard g? In which case “Angelo” is not right either unless you pronounce it “Angle-oh”

Daisybuttercup12345 · 10/09/2024 19:21

Evan.

HoppityBun · 10/09/2024 19:24

Evangelo

shoopshoopdedoo · 10/09/2024 20:34

I prefer Angelos to Evan. But I think I’d choose Vangelis/Van.

BoleynMemories13 · 10/09/2024 20:39

You prefer Angelo, so it seems obvious to me that he should be Angelo. It's perfectly acceptable to pick a name which reflects your child's culture.

MadonnaLouiseVeronicaCiccone · 10/09/2024 20:45

Angelo. Love it.

KittyEmK · 10/09/2024 23:12

Angelo is lovely
