Lola

So following on from my other tread, having done some research it seems Lola is used quite a bit in Spain. Not used as much as Sofia or Lucia.
There is also some different meanings out there and positive meanings not just "woman of sorrows". It's really growing on me and rolls off the tongue.

What are your thoughts on Lola?
Does it sound Spanish enough?
What is your favourite out of Lola, Lucia or Sofia? And which would you pick?

Thank you.

I grew up in Madrid and can confirm you won't (generally) get people making associations with the Kinks song. The strongest association would probably be with a famous flamenco singer from the 60s-70s, Lola Flores. However Lola is not usually given as a full name, it is a nickname for Dolores, and more common amongst older women, particularly in the south.

I realise this is an old thread but had to add ! I know a ‘Lola’ named from the biblical connection and ‘strong woman’ or ‘warrior.’

Catandsquirrel · 21/01/2025 13:42

What's the biblical connection? Our lady of sorrows?

Just a google search, not sure if there’s anything further! I think the thread just shows how differently people perceive names. I wish I’d realised my DD’s name was ‘common,’ didn’t think of checking mum sites, I just liked the name…at the time . She loves it though and wouldn’t change it now- as an adult!!

I love Lola! I think it's fun and chic at the same time.

Lyn348 · 23/01/2025 21:37

I like Lola, but it does get me singing L-O-L-A Lola.
I love Sophia (prefer it spelt that way), like Lucia but so many ways to pronounce it.

Eenameenadeeka · 23/01/2025 21:44

It's more of a nickname to me, or a name for a puppy. I'm early 30s and definitely think of the song as well. But there's no name everyone loves, so if you love it then that's the main thing.
I know a Lucia who has the nickname Lulu, which is quite cute but still has a less cutesy name for when she's an adult.

Might sound cute for a baby , but not when they are older.

I love Lola and didn't realise it was Spanish until now. Even though I knew a Spanish girl called Lola, it never crossed my mind it was actually a Spanish name.

Terrible. Never understood the popularity of it in the early 2000s thought it had died a death. Surprised it’s still being used. Has seedy undertones and is insubstantial and unprofessional. Odd choice,
