I like unusual names (like Caspar, Miller and Luca) and my other half likes traditional names (Alexander, James) - I can't think of anything where we'll meet in the middle and we've only got a few weeks left - any ideas? HELP!!!!

I would wait till dc is born and his name will become suddenly apparent

peachbaby · 18/04/2008 20:28

your doing all the work so perhaps you get to choose the first name and husband a couple of middle names? my baby is due tomorrow and my dh and i dont agree on a name either but he agreed its probably fair if i have final say as long as he doesnt hate it.

dizzydixies · 18/04/2008 20:30

we agreed on one boys and one girls name each so we had a choice of 2 when they were born and then chose which one they looked most like

well it worked with dd1 anyway

girlfrommars · 18/04/2008 20:37

Could you name the baby Alexander and call him Xander?

Amberc · 18/04/2008 20:44

DH hates Xander - he will call him Alex (his family are Eric, Alan and Alec - how imaginitive!). He's not giving an inch on any of my choices and can't come up with any names of his own - I am doing all the work! We already decided on a middle name which is Joseph and my late father's name (he likes that and wants to use it as a first name but I feel it's too much).

How about Luke? Sounds a bit like Luca but more "solid old school" if that makes sense!!

WE were still arguing whilst I was in the birthing pool though, so I'm not really able to offer any practical advice!

ElmaH · 18/04/2008 20:47

Luca is no longer unusual - there are 3 at my baby group. I think you have to see the baby first, but it still took us 6 weeks to name DS. I found a book called Cool Baby Names from Mothercare, went thru it and wrote down all the ones I liked (like you I like interesting names, DP likes boring ones). After writing 30 or so names, there was only 1 DP liked, so that's the one we went with!

dizzydixies · 18/04/2008 20:47

or lucas?

You're having a mare? Won't that hurt? And shouldn't you be thinking of things like Dobbina or Black Beauty or something

I agree that there is no hurry. You have 6 weeks after he is born before you have to decide.
My only advice here is that you make it clear to everyone you can think of that you haven't decided yet. My friend's DH went and phoned people within an hour of the birth and told them all the name that he wanted but she wasn't 100% about. By the time she found out what he'd done she felt that it was too late to correct people! Not saying your DH would be so underhand but it's always worth being on the safe side

PosieParker · 19/04/2008 11:09

I like Edward shortened to Bear, too!! Or how about 'proper' first name and more adventerous middle name and then the child can choose. My sister did this and calls their ds by his middle name, if he decides it's too different when he gets to school he has a choice. This has it's own pitfalls though.

PotPourri · 19/04/2008 11:13

I would second the normal first name and more adventurous middle name. And tell DH that you will be calling the baby that middle name, sort of as a nickname. And then whatever name sticks will be best.

Reuben is quite a good one as you can call him Ben, but reuben is a bit more unusual.

Or Joseph James, and you can call him JJ. Having a good nickname might be the best way to go, as later the child can choose whether to use that or the proper name....

sophiebbb · 19/04/2008 11:19

Write a list and ask him to pick ones he doesn't absolutely HATE. Then leave them to grow on hom for the next 6 weeks ie start calling your tummy one of the names that you like and he doesn't hate - it's funny how names can grow.

I did this 3 months ago with our girls name - he didn't hate it - but now he really likes it as it has grown on him and that is what my tummy is called.....

PS My nephew is called Caspar James and my other nephew is Noah Louis
