7 months pregnant wirh baby girl. my partner and i have named our baby girl Emmy, thinking her full name will be Clementine.

ive had feedback from others though that clementine is just a tad too unique (i dont mind feedback!). Wondering if anyone can think of another full name for Emmy that isnt Emily, Emma, Emmerson or Emmeline?

fhanks!

Having a nickname that doesn't begin with the same letter as your first name is a pain as an adult. This isn't really the time to show how clever and unique you are ..

Elizabeth? Rebecca? Amelia (Millie)?

Im sure there are more examples, but those are all common instances of names where the typical nicknames begin with a different letter.

Emerald. Not Emilia (horrible mealy noise.)

Funnily enough I always think that (the mealy sound) about Amelia, but not about Emilia! Odd.

Different people will have different associations with names/sounds. You'll never be able to please everyone. Give your baby a name that you both like and don't worry too much about anyone else.

Or as a child! Much easier when sewing name tags on school uniforms - C Smith vs E Smith?!

I wouldn't go for Clementine as a 'long ' name for Emmie . Not because of its being unusual , which it isn't , but more because Emmie is not a natural diminutive for it and thus it sounds contrived. Emmeline or Emma are your obvious choices and if you don't want anything 'unique' I would go for Emma. IMO Emma is a nicer name and is more on trend now.

MerryMarys · 04/09/2024 10:26

I've know a couple of Clementines who are called Clem. I much prefer your shortening to it!

But Clementine's friends are likely to call her Clem or Clemmie. That's the easiest and most intuitive shortening

foreverwingingitt · 04/09/2024 10:28

My 14 month old is called Emmy, not shortened from anything and we love it just as much now as when I was pregnant x

Is it? My nickname (that I go by almost all the time) begins with a different letter to my full name and it's never been an issue? I can't think how it would be an issue?

OP I prefer Clementine to all the alternatives suggested, aside from Emmeline which is also lovely.

I'm not so sure - if she's called Emmy day-to-day it isn't all that likely that her friends will need to come up with a diminutive.

JFDIYOLO · 04/09/2024 10:31

Whatever you choose - make it easy to spell. I've spent my life with a name with four different possible spellings and people constantly get it wrong. On a certificate. On a credit. On a leaving card, yet ...

Put it with the surname - is it harmonious?

Are the initials ok and don't spell anything off? (EG my schoolfriend S.T.D. - nobody noticed til too late ...)

How will it look on a business card? A nameplate? A byline?

longdistanceclaraclara · 04/09/2024 10:32

I like Clementine but it doesn't lead to Emmy. She'll be Clem or Clemmie to her friends unless you only call her Emmy and never use her given name which makes it rather pointless in having one. Emmy will get shortened to Em anyway

happytobee · 04/09/2024 10:48

I know a lovely young person called Emmylou (named after the singer Emmylou Harris I believe), she loves her name and also gets the nickname Em or Emmy (or Lou Lou!!).

harlacem0507 · 04/09/2024 10:49

My 14 month old is called Emmie. Not a nickname, that's her name! Everyone seems to love it, my partner was more keen on it than me as I didn't know any Emmie's, and when I was pregnant it was either that or Ellie, but Emmie was slightly more unique so we went for that and we love it.

I have since met a few babies/girls called Emmie, one spelling was Emie and the other Emmy, I don't like how either of these are spelt but it's peoples preference isn't it! I also have a daughter called Lacey. We shorten that to Lace when calling for her etc and Emmie sometimes gets the nickname Emzie 🤣🤣

Clementine is a lovely name but I agree with others that Emmie isn't a nickname for that it's more than likely to be Clemmie or Clem xxx

MelodyMalone · 04/09/2024 10:52

I think if you call her Emmie, introduce her as Emmie, etc, that's what people will call her regardless of her real name being Clementine.

Of course she might choose her own nickname later and prefer to be known as Clem or Clemmie or even something else.

HanSB · 04/09/2024 10:52

Noemie

Scottishgirl85 · 04/09/2024 10:53

Emmy really isn't a shortened version of Clementine.

This. She will get called CLEMMIE. Sounds far too much like CLAMMY.

Not for me. Clementine is a bloody awful name sorry @Sept2024

MelodyMalone · 04/09/2024 10:58

Why not? If you can have Liz or Beth or Betty for Elizabeth, Tina for Christina, Millie for Amelia, Lottie for Charlotte, Lexie for Alexandra, Katie for Catherine, etc etc, I really don't see what's wrong with Emmy for Clementine.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 04/09/2024 11:03

Esme (Ez mee) could alternate to Emmie?

LadyGabriella · 04/09/2024 11:03

You should use a name you love, clementine isn’t too unusual.
Esmee?

Yes.

I have a name and a nickname that begin with different letters.

It is a right pain in the backside.

frenchbreadandbites · 04/09/2024 11:12

@MelodyMalone same! That's why I choose Emilia for my daughter! 😂
