We are really stuck for middle names for our baby girl eliana. We have a huge family and no matter what name we pick we are going to upset someone. Me and my partner aren't married so she is taking his last name. My last name is macdonald so was wondering if anyone has a girl name like a nickname for it. Or another thought is my dad's name was John so looking for a girls name like it

If you’re not married, baby could have MacDonald as her last name. Perhaps with your partner’s name in the middle? If you are sure she will have his last name, I’d just use MacDonald as her middle!

Eliana Joan?

I'd go for something totally unrelated to family. That won't upset anyone and will be just hers. Was she born in August? If so, Summer could be a nice middle name.

Mamma283828 · 01/09/2024 17:51

Use your surname as a middle name? Or use your partner's and baby takes your surname.

Unconnected to your name, but I think Faith is a lovely middle name.

KimKardashiansLostEarring · 01/09/2024 17:56

Why would using a totally unrelated name upset people? Middle names don’t have to relate to family.

Maybe use MacDonald as her middle name if you are giving her your partner's surname.

Kmward36 · 01/09/2024 18:05

We’ve actually used a male name as our daughter’s middle name (James) . We love it. So you could just use John

it’s quirky and we get comments but we love it and so does she (it was my grandads name)

HettyCletter · 01/09/2024 20:58

I like Eliana Joy, and it’s close enough to John to be honouring the name.

Not that I can see? Where?

“We have a huge family and no matter what name we pick we are going to upset someone.” doesn’t answer my question.

You misread my initial query.

Eliana Joan
Eliana Johanna

What about using your own name as a middle name? She's getting dad's surname, mum's middle name and then her first name I assume is a joint decision - hopefully no one in the family can get upset with that decision!

Rory17384949 · 02/09/2024 09:54

Eliana Joan
Eliana Jane
Eliana McDonald Surname
Eliana Donna

Eliana McDonald Surname

I would 100% go with this option. Or double barrel the surnames and choose whatever name you want as a middle. I'm not married and there is no way I'd not have included my surname (we double barrelled).

FWIW, I purposely chose a middle name that had no family connection whatsoever - I like children to have their own names.

PedantScorner · 02/09/2024 11:13

I'd call her Eliana Dadsurname McDonald
Ellie Mac sounds OK.

Doublethecuddles · 03/09/2024 20:27

In Scotland it used to be common to have your granny’s maiden name as a middle name.
As others suggested use MacDonald as a middle name.
Also in Scotland it was quite common to add ina onto the end of a male name so Donaldina.
