I don't like the name Dustin, I just think of dustbin.

That's two of my children's names right there. Nice thread.

Why continue to read down the names if you know you'll be offended if you discover names you've used? You could have just clicked away

Plus silly posh names like Araminta, Atticus, Peregrine and Olympia.

😂😂 don’t think I’ve ever come across one of these as a name of a person! Isn’t a peregrine a falcon?? They are slightly strange for human names!

No, Peregrine means pilgrim. It's a very old and classical name.

girljulian · 30/08/2024 17:24

Emily. I hate it and have always hated it, it's just something about the sound of it. It's not even an association thing because there are so many Emilys, I actually have not one but two friends called Emily and I adore them both, but the sound of the name puts my back up.

Soditsally · 30/08/2024 17:24

I'm so shocked I've not come across my name yet .. bloody hate it 😂
Not in the slightest bit offended that I've found 2 of my grandchildren and Arlo which I still hope for one day .. come on son , give us a boy !

Well learnt something new there then! There are Peregrine Falcons though. I had honestly never heard the word Peregrine in any other context.

wickerlady · 30/08/2024 16:12

Kai
Levi
Jayden

Worst of the worst

Do you mean the association with the names and the assumption of what a Jayden would be like? Or do you just not like the actual names.

Also (to anyone), what's so bad about Kai? I'd not heard that name until the last year or so. I quite like it but it's quickly gotten a bad rep. I must have bad taste.

I detest the name Mildred. I just think of dread and mildew. I don't think name will ever make a comeback.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 30/08/2024 17:34

Candida and Sadie are the only ones I really dislike.

There are lots of try hard names that make me roll my eyes, but I can imagine someone wanting something obviously "special" for their child. I can not imagine why anyone would call their beautiful child after a type of yeast known for being the most common cause of fungal infections worldwide. Or Sadie, the harshest and roughest name I can think of.

LL1991 · 30/08/2024 17:36

Justin - my dad used to joke it was for kids who's parent's were 'just in'!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 30/08/2024 17:37

I like lots of these other names though, all the Sarah, Susan, Margaret, Alan ones.

Namerchangee · 30/08/2024 17:37

Callum. It sounds like someone clearing their throat of phlegm.

Logan, Mason, Jayden, Kayden, Hayden, Loki - all sound like little scrotes.

Surnames as names. An awful American invention.

Quote re Robson Green : -

"He was named in the Northeast tradition of naming the first son after family surnames: Robson was his paternal grandmother's maiden name,"

I love some of the names that people hate! I guess that’s how us humans are.

I think we tend to dislike the names of people who have been unpleasant.

AntarcticOcean · 30/08/2024 17:51

Literally don’t HATE any name. Maybe if I had negative connotations to a person their name could bring up bad feelings, but I don’t. So whilst I might think ‘I wouldn’t have chosen that’ nothing stirs up much emotion 😂 my daughters and my mums name are on here though & they are lovely people.

BoleynMemories13 · 30/08/2024 17:54

Also Maude , which I fear will make a comeback imminently due to the current 'old lady chic' trend but this is far from chic imo, it's ugly and frumpy. Feels too close to mould, to me.

housethatbuiltme · 30/08/2024 17:55

From personal experiance I have an instant reaction to Ian/Iain & Liam... every single man I have met with those names (and theres been a fair few its not based off just 1 single encounter) has been an absolute dumpster fire of a disgusting human being. Proper 'alpha' male controlling women hating domestic abusers.

On a just pure sound thing:

I hate the name Grace, Gray-sss... it's just so harsh, masculine sounding (Gray and Grayson both being boy names), unflattering and ironically not at all graceful. It is however wildly popular where I live so obviously I'm the odd one out in not liking it.

Also not a fan of Gretchen as it conjours up a mental image because it sounds like it should be a slang descriptor for something you would cough up when ill.

Naomi, Phoebe, Zoe, Chloe... they sound harsh too me, I think it must have something to do with the opposing vowels.

Daisy, Poppy, Meadow & Blossom etc... I just find them perpetually childish and better suited to farm animal names.

Also on a high horse moral issue sticking boys names on girls makes me cringe too. There is nothing wrong with being a girl and having a girls name, girls are not lesser and don't have to sound more manly. They always claim its unisex and they don't see 'gender' but the same people who call their daughters Rory & Finley NEVER name their sons Elizabeth & Rose. I just think it makes quite a sexist statement.

And Amelia, I have a family member with Amelia, its literally a medical condition. People wouldn't name their kid after any other type of birth defect but this ones apparently fine. So weird.

MrsWhattery · 30/08/2024 17:56

I don't mind Sarah, but it's funny how many of them I know/work with. Also Pauls. I have a lot of work contacts and there are a good 10 Sarahs and 10 Pauls. I bet there are loads of nice 40-something couples called Paul and Sarah.
