I don't like the name Dustin, I just think of dustbin.

Ryan and Rory and I have no idea why. I don't like the sound of them.

Arabella

FunkyClunky · 31/08/2024 05:16

Bella & anything ending with -belle -bel -bella I find sickly and just cannot bear. I always hear them in a twee, high pitched little girls voice!

Also hate Jackson, Mason, Taylor, Cassidy, Mackenzie, Maddison, Kayden, Jayden, Maisy

Anything where parents tried to be cool and creative with spelling but wound up looking like they just played a load of random letters in scrabble. WHY???

I like loads of the names on here. The world would be boring if we all liked the same things!

Some of my own less favorite are maud, mavis and timothy.

I used to dislike Tabitha but it's kind of grown on me.

I don't dislike the name Tabitha as such but to me it's a cat name (thanks to Beatrix Potter). A relative named her daughter Tabitha and every time I hear it I think "but that's a cat!"

turbonerd · 31/08/2024 09:17

I don’t hate them, but I don’t see the point of using surnames as names.
Particularly -son names. Johnson just mean the son of John! It’s like you haven’t been given a name of your own then.

Rory, because of Rory the racing car. And Tate, because in my language the way Tate is pronounced means ‘stupid’.

I’ve spotted one of my DC names on here. Not offended. 😄

Each to their own. Was chuffed to see the connection Ethel -Æthelflæd. Strong Queen.

My son wanted to name our dog Camilla. He was vetoed.

What a mean spirited thread.

Did you have to read it 3 times to check?

Marie and Mia.

Because Marie can be Maree or
Mah ree.

Mia can be Me ah or My ah.

I invariably get it wrong 🙄

Very traditional in Ireland and Scotland actually. Imported to America by them.

What are the Irish examples please?
I'm Irish and can't think of any off the top of my head.

The opposite is very common here though...first names that became surnames.

lavendermoonx · 31/08/2024 10:19

Oh how could I forget the worst of all - Ruth.

LynetteScavo · 31/08/2024 11:55

I don't get the dislike for Ruth, but it seems to be strongly disliked by some people.

It seems Arlo and Amelia are both Marmite names!

This thread would be better if people said what names they hated but also included the names they had chosen for their own little darlings.

Why, the only purpose for that would be so that if your so personally offended over something not aimed you, you could then fire back with a personal attack aimed at that persons children.

That would be bullying and 'personal attacks' which is not allowed on virtually any name etymology or discussing site.

If your so upset at a random statement of someone elses name tastes that you feel the need to attack their children you should probably just leave the thread.

If I'd been named Ethel, I'd call myself Ettie.

Ettie is cute! Also met a Hettie the other day <3 short for Henrietta I think. The other Henrietta we know is Etta for short.

That’s a lot of assumptions you have made there. I’ve made no indication that I am offended, personally offended, upset, or itching to attack other people’s choice of names. Merely that it would be interesting context to see, “I hate X, Y, and Z, but like A, B, C”.

As a helpful aside, “your” and “you’re” have different meanings.

I have literally just explain why thats not how it works, take offense at my apparent assumption logic all you want but thats the rules on most name discussing forums and for that exact reason.

BobbyBiscuits · 31/08/2024 14:39

Barrie. Barry is bad but with an IE it's terrible. Same with Martyn. Like Martin is so boring, let's try and make it a bit more rock n roll?
Mervyn or Melvin of either spelling are dreadful.
For women, Beryl, Cheryl, Doreen, Maureen, Linda... I dk why I guess they're not fashionable at all right now.

For the second time, I haven’t taken offence at any comment, or your reply to me.

As a helpful aside, your apostrophe key doesn’t seem to be functioning.

As a helpful aside you are not contributing to the thread just causing a distraction. There is a word for that.

Off the top of my head. Lots more if I gave it proper thought. I find massively overdone names boring. Evidently lots of people don’t share the same view, hence there being so very many of them.
