We welcomed our little boy on Friday and have yet to decide on a name. Please help us decide on what to call him, he’s such a sweet little character and I’m starting to worry that he will forever be known as ‘baby’ as we can’t decide!!

Names we have on our list so far that we like are -

Charlie
Freddie
Albie
Archie

Would love to hear thoughts and also any suggestions.

Fraser , I would've chosen it for ds but too similar to my surname, classic but not really common, but also not out there in the way it would raise an eyebrow as an adult

Pipecleanerrevival · 26/08/2024 22:55

Charlie is the best from your list

Finlay
Theo
Joey
Lee
Mikey
Jake
Stevie
Eddie

If you go for any of those names, please name them the longform version and use the nickname version as a nickname.

Aquamarine1029 · 26/08/2024 22:57

Personally, I wouldn't give a child a diminutive name. They won't be a child for long, and the name needs to serve him well his entire life, no matter what he chooses to do.

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 26/08/2024 23:09

Congratulations on your little nameless one! We didn’t name our eldest for a month- this was 22 years ago… he’s since been named! 😁 He’s Theodor/Theo (my family in the states call him Theo/Teddy)

So, of yours, my favourite is Freddie. My grandfather was Frederick so I’m biased.

As mentioned above, I also like Finlay/Finley.

Other names:
Jack
Vinnie
Bruno
Barnaby
Blake
Bertie
Monty
Toby
Cody
Wyatt
Rex
Eli

If you like the 'cheeky chappie' -ie ending, it usually means a diminutive such as a nickname for an actual first name which might wear a bit thin by the time he's a grown man. Would you consider names ending with -y (same sound), such as Rory, Timothy, Gary, Jeremy, Anthony, Gregory, Hilary or Zachary?

anonhop · 26/08/2024 23:10

Agree re giving the full name on birth certificate so they have a choice, even if you register Charlie, for example, as the chosen name at nursery & school.

Charlie is good. I also like Fraser, Henry, Matthew x

I think Archie is the least overused of that lot, so I’d go for that. I’d agree with PPs full names are generally best

How about Toby?

or

Laurence nn Laurie
Robert nn Bobby or Robbie
William nn Billy
Michael nn Mikey
Jonathan nn Jonny
Christopher nn Christy
Daniel nn Danny
Ernest nn Ernie
Arnold nn Arnie
Benjamin nn Benjy
Alexander nn Sandy

Are all less overused options

StormingNorman · 26/08/2024 23:18

Alistair shortened to Ali
Edward to Eddie
Jonty
Rory

GeneralUser · 26/08/2024 23:20

Full names, although Charles sounds like an old man as does Archibald.

Richard (Ritchie)
James (Jimmy)
Michael (Mikey)
Thomas (Tommy)
Edward (Eddie)

Freddie is the one I like of yours.

LizzieSiddal · 26/08/2024 23:22

I love Albie but I’d name him Albert on his BC and then Albie for short.

Oh, I've never heard of Christy as a shortened name of Christopher. It's always Chris (or Chrissy/ie for a girl)

Congratulations!

Sorry, can’t bear ‘ie’ names. To me they sound naff and juvenile. Have a look at some of the PP though - there are some great examples.

I love Albie but I’d name him Albert on his BC and then Albie for short.

Or Albus, if you are a harry potter fan.

ChocoChocoLatte · 26/08/2024 23:24

Albie is lovely

Arthur nn Art

cupcaske123 · 26/08/2024 23:25

Charlie.

Messen · 26/08/2024 23:26

Christy is lovely.

I like Charlie from your list, it’s a nice friendly sounding name. Don’t like Charles though.

as for calling a child Gary or Timothy 😂 please spare them.

78Summer · 26/08/2024 23:27

I like Charlie but if he was going to be in a senior position in later years Charles has a better ring and he can alternate. Same with Freddie / Frederick.

MyBrownEyedHandsomeBoy · 26/08/2024 23:27

Jack

Arthur

Sydney

Oliver

Louis

Bertie

James

Rowan

Harry

Popettypop · 26/08/2024 23:27

Jonty
Brodie
Gino
Stanley

DiscoBeat · 26/08/2024 23:29

I really like Edward. So many options: Teddy, Ed, Eddie, Woody, but Edward/Ed still a good name for a professional adult male.

Numsmetty · 26/08/2024 23:32

Alfred.. it gives you the choice of Alfie or Freddie

KenIsAnAccessory · 26/08/2024 23:32

I like all of your names! Others with a similar vibe:

Rory
Francis (Frankie)
Jacob (Jakey)
Edward (Ted, Teddy, Bear)
Theodore (Theo)

Raquelos · 26/08/2024 23:34

I like Ziggy, given to an adorable little boy I know. If you need it to be short for something then Sigmund works as a family name inspiration.

Or Asti, genuinely short (in the case I know) for Aethelstan
