What do you think of Roderick

What do you think of Roderick? With possible nickname Roddy or Ro. It has same origins as Spanish Rodrigo. I don't know what to think of Roderick, but I kinda like it because I'm trying to find longer names to add to my list, that are also unusual and acceptable, but don't really like Rodrigo.

Seems more like a surname to me. Maybe Frederick or Rory instead? You could also consider using it as a middle name.

A lot of these comments are clearly from an older audience though so I wouldn’t put too much thought into dated Monty Python or Only Fools and Horses references if you’re set on it.

It's not, it's Dave.

Too true!

Sandwichgen · 25/08/2024 00:27

Roderick Alleyn , for Ngaio Marsh fans

he went by Rory, I seem to remember

DramaAlpaca · 25/08/2024 01:36

The only Roderick I've known always went by Rory.

It's a perfectly nice name. If you like it then use it OP - the opinions of random MNers shouldn't influence you.

I don't like it - it makes me think of 'Rodders' from Only Fools and Horses.

For the nintieth time, he was Rodney, a completely different name Hmm

Reminds me of a school reader:

What do you think of Roderick

All I can think of now is
‘Welease Woderwick’

Same

worcesterpear · 25/08/2024 09:37

@ForGreyKoala I thought Del Boy called him Rodders though (I might be wrong).

Look, I'm Scottish.

Sure, Rodericks exist.

But they're in their 40s/50s at least.

And it was deeply deeply uncool even back in the 80s and 90s when it was quite common.

Still in regular use in Scotland though, even if it is in single figures every year.

I think it's fine, OP. In the same vein as Frederick.

Lemongrassandcamomile · 25/08/2024 17:27

Another Scot here. I know several, although none under the age of 40. But it sounds like a perfectly normal name to me.

AlwaysKindaKnewYoudBeTheDeathOfMe · 25/08/2024 18:53

So is Barry @OhMrPleasant

To me they're in the same category.

user47 · 25/08/2024 18:55

FFS it is awful, really really awful.

Xyz1234567 · 25/08/2024 20:35

user1492757084 yeah right, little Octavius, Lancelot and Galahad are really going to thank their parents for those names. They'll have the piss taken out of them for their entire lives.

muffledvoice · 25/08/2024 20:52

I know a. Roderick... he goes by hot rod...

zingally · 27/08/2024 17:20

Awful. Way too "hard" sounding.

Nigatsudo · 29/08/2024 16:35

I think of Roderick Usher... as in from The Fall of the House of Usher, the Edgar Allan Poe macabre story.

The name is too obscure for me.
