What do you think of Roderick

What do you think of Roderick? With possible nickname Roddy or Ro. It has same origins as Spanish Rodrigo. I don't know what to think of Roderick, but I kinda like it because I'm trying to find longer names to add to my list, that are also unusual and acceptable, but don't really like Rodrigo.

I don't like it - it makes me think of 'Rodders' from Only Fools and Horses.

Theoldcuriosityshop · 24/08/2024 19:14

Rod Stewart is Roderick.

Ljcrow · 24/08/2024 19:19

Sounds posh. Not in a good way.

Autumnismyfavouritetimeofyear · 24/08/2024 19:20

I dont like it, or any derivatives of it. Calling a kid Rod or Roddy is going to make school miserable.

OpalOwl · 24/08/2024 19:21

I grew up in Scotland and went to school with two Rodericks. One was always known as Roddy.
No negative associations for me.
I also knew a lovely old man called Roderick.

MrsMaudeLebowski · 24/08/2024 19:22

I really like it- makes me think of Roddy from the band Idlewild. Better than all the Arlos, Milos and Theos.

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/08/2024 19:23

Don’t like it. Sorry.

3peassuit · 24/08/2024 19:26

I don’t think he’d thank you for calling him Roderick. How about Rory?

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 24/08/2024 19:26

Like a pp, I thought of Roderick Spode from the PG Wodehouse books. Wikipedia describes him as a “fascist politician and designer of ladies' lingerie”

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 24/08/2024 19:28

Yeah. Life of Brian is an old film now but it is the kind that will get handed down to younger generations as a cult classic, so I think the Woderwick joke will still crop up every now and then.

OccasionalHope · 24/08/2024 19:29

I think it’s quite cool.

Surely no harsher sounding than Frederick?

Shitlord · 24/08/2024 19:29

I like it if it were not for the associations.

Woderick, Rodders/ Dave (not that Nicholas Lyndhurst isn't a great actor!), Roderick the Rat.

For some reason it's a nice name that's ended up sounding really, really uncool. Roddy isn't good.

Alaric is awesome.

Tigger1895 · 24/08/2024 19:37

Not being insensitive but what if he can’t say his R’s. It could lead to a lifetime of suffering

ReadtheReviews · 24/08/2024 19:39

Roger Rick. None of the diminutive are nice. And also Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Skybluepinky · 24/08/2024 19:43

awful

Roderick (Rod) Stewart makes me want to vom please dont do it

ladygindiva · 24/08/2024 19:51

AuCo44 · 24/08/2024 15:05

What about Rhodri?

Agree, much nicer

AthenaBasil · 24/08/2024 20:36

My son has a Gaelic version of the name but I’m not the biggest fan of Roderick. I like it as a character in a fictional work as it does seem an interesting name, just not the kind I like in reality. I don’t like the most obvious nicknames like Rod and Roddy. I quite like Rick but it’s a bit dated for most people and he’d have older people doing that annoying “Ricky” from Eastenders impression.

Aquamarine1029 · 24/08/2024 20:38

I really, really dislike it. One of the creepiest men I've ever had the displeasure of knowing is named Roderick. Aside from that, it's just not a pleasant sounding name, and it's very clunky IMO.

LuminousCrystalFox · 24/08/2024 20:41

I think you have your answer, OP.

SlivedAvocado · 24/08/2024 20:55

Another Life of Brian connection from me. Woderwick. Might need to wait a few more generations for it to be usable again...

AlwaysKindaKnewYoudBeTheDeathOfMe · 24/08/2024 20:55

Look, I'm Scottish.

Sure, Rodericks exist.

But they're in their 40s/50s at least.

And it was deeply deeply uncool even back in the 80s and 90s when it was quite common.

Moreteaandchocolate · 24/08/2024 22:54

DaisyChain505 · 24/08/2024 14:22

It’s reminds me of diary of a whimpy kid. Very American.

I have the same association.

PurpleChrayn · 24/08/2024 23:14

Joke name.
