People have been know to laugh when I tell them my little girls name and I dont know why. I love it and she loves it. She is called Elaine and she is four. People also often think they have missed heard it and call her Elanor or Elizabeth and once Jazmin(?!) so what do you honestky think of it? Is it stupid?

Elaine is a gorgeous name. Not that it matters a jot what I - or anyone else - thinks as you love it and so does she. But I do think it's fab. Isn't it Arthurian?

dizzydixies · 16/04/2008 20:53

no it is not, I have a cousin with the same name and its fab on her - she is fab too

she gets called Lainey sometimes and she's nearly 30 lol

lovely name, nice choice, well done

I think some people are always trying to look for the more 'peculiar' aspect of a name as people are trying so hard to be different these days

if they have nothing nice to say, tell them to sod off

dizzydixies · 16/04/2008 20:53

in our family, we have two, its a scots version of Helen

Why ask? As long as you like it what does it matter what other people think?

FWIW I dont like it as I think it is a little dated, a bit like Pamela or Barbara.

But she will be unique....the only one with that name and as long as you like it, ignore other people!

My name's Elaine so if anyone says anything bad about it I'll come and have a quiet word in their ear, okay?

tortoise · 16/04/2008 21:12

dylanthecat · 16/04/2008 21:13

It's a lovely name. It sounds more of a woman's name than a child's IYSWIM - but I would say that's a good thing.

dylanthecat · 16/04/2008 21:17

she will be a grown up for longer than a child so she will grow in to it more as she gets bigger anyway, or thats what i thought when i chose it some names i couldnt imagine on a woman that i could on a baby

And I get called ellidebs, hence my MN name! My second name makes it up. I do think it is an older sort of name as I'm 24 and there aren't many Elaine's I know my age, just mush older but that's not to say it's old fashioned, plenty of names come back around again. Time for a revival I think, don't you Tortoise ?

dizzydixies · 16/04/2008 21:19

am not sure I know any teenager who actually likes the name their parents gave them, I know I certainly didn't and don't expect my girls too either - tis a right of passage lol

dylanthecat · 16/04/2008 21:20

no mines Amy so i didnt want her to be in a class where half the girls have the same name like me!

Dylan, I know exactly what you mean, and I think girls names are a bit trickier for it.

3andnomore · 16/04/2008 21:25

There is nothing wrong with Elaine, and actually it is a really pretty name...but I suppose it's not a "current" name...I don't think I know a little girl Elaine, but I know women my age....but then....who cares...it's a lovely name, it's not stupid or a "non-name"....people can just be so bloody rude!

tortoise · 16/04/2008 21:28

ellideb yes absolutely.
