This is light hearted and not intended to make fun. Just wondering what the most unusual or out there names you’ve heard lately?

I know a Hunnie, a Bleubell (spelled like this) and a Honey Blossom, what about you?

I went to school with a boy whose initials were B.O. Once is unfortunate, but he had two brothers who were also B.O. Brett, Ben and Brendon if I remember rightly.

HamBagelNoCheese · 16/08/2024 22:53

Candida 😬

Happy (Not British, although thankfully a very happy individual!)

Also know a pair of siblings (both under 10yrs) who are Chinese, one has a very traditional Chinese name, the other a dated western name. Think along the lines of Xiang-Chen and Nigel. Nigels name is his legal name on his birth certificate, not an adopted western name.

On an American baby app I saw a woman wanted to name her daughter Remington. One thing for a boy, but got a girl... Poor child!

The problem with these threads is that people are so ignorant about other cultures. People laughing at Cubby, for example, when it's probably the Welsh name Cybi (I think that's the way it's spelled). Incidentally, H from Steps has a son called Cybi...

Seashor · 17/08/2024 00:26

Who's laughing at it? The poster just said she hadn't heard it before, which could equally be true if it is Cybi.

I heard Cybi for the first time a few weeks ago when I listened to an interview with H from Steps. I've managed 40 years without ever hearing it before.

😂 I saw that thread. Hilarious

toastofthetown · 17/08/2024 06:24

@WaitingForMojo @CurlewKate @Tryingtohelp12 it’s definitely Cubby. I’ve seen it written down. Maybe it’s an anglicisation of the Welsh name, but (based on their other kids names which are more popular but match Cubby vibes-wise) I’m not sure. I also wasn’t laughing at it or posting in bad faith. Cubby with that spelling has never registered in the charts, so it was one of the most unusual names I’ve heard. No judgement or mocking from me. I love unusual names and while I wouldn’t use Cubby myself, it really suits him. Maybe naive, but I took at face value the OP’s post that this thread was light hearted and not judgmental, so joined it. Hope over experience based on how MN names section can react to unusual names, but I hoped it would be a thread where people could share unusual names for people to delight in without the mocking, snobbery and close mindedness that often comes here.

I met a baby Plum once (girl) which surprised me. This was in Brighton though, so 🤷

Also in Brighton, a girl named Princessing. That really was her name She went by ‘Prinny’. Her siblings had some quite unusual names too. Django and Geronimo if I remember correctly (and others, they were a big family).

I had an ethnically Chinese work colleague who had a western name, but her Chinese name meant Jade Plum.

I think Plum works as a name.

Edited

I like Candida, it's Latin and a saints name.

Not a child - although he will have been at one point, my favourite is a chap I worked with at a clients office, he was Zoltan. Epic name.

"Pocahontas - white and on a council eastate"
What's the council estate got to do with it?
I know it says light hearted in the title but these threads generally end up being really judgemental.
