My favourite short names are Eli and Joy

SkaneTos · 14/08/2024 21:13

Don't know how unusual these names are, but they are nice short names.

For a boy
Ivar
Tor
Tyr
Odd (Norse name, means "spear").

For a girl
Ida
Ika
Gia
Pia
My
Moa
Li

I see that a previous poster mentioned the name Ola. That is a great name! In my home country it's a male name, but in many other countries I think it's a female name.

Pi
Short, but the tantalising fact about Pi is that it is an irrational number which means that its decimal representation has no end and no repeating pattern - which would appear to suit the Welsh language admirably.

Please, please don't call your child Odd, OP.

I realise it would be quite a different name to have in an English-speaking country. But OP wanted unusual names, and it would be unusual in the UK, I think!

(It's a common name in Norway).

GogLais · 14/08/2024 22:15

How Welsh is the surname? Is it an anglicised one, e.g. Cadwallader or is it something Welsh, e.g. ap Rheinallt (not strictly 11 letters)?

Olaf or Eli would seem a bit strange with the latter.

Ivo is lovely too

GogLais · 14/08/2024 23:52

Thanks @tinkpeach . Does it need too work in any countries other than the UK? I'd give Odd a miss.

Do you want a one syllable name? Elias and Iona are short but have 3 syllables.
