What boy name do you like best? Can’t pick out of two.

heeeeeelp! (Please) having trouble picking a boy name- going back and fourth. I love both so much. Just want other opinions on what they prefer. If you don’t like any that’s fine too😂

I feel like they both give off a different vibe. And FYI my other children have old names.

So we have
Wilby ⚡️
or
Varley⚡️

we would like the middle name to be either roscoe or rue .

rue- because we lost a baby boy Ruben.
roscoe has no meaning we just like it.

let me know what you think.

thanks all! :)

Sorry dislike them all. Is the intention to find a name no one else has?

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 07/08/2024 10:18

Oh gosh. Sorry. I suppose Roscoe, nn Ross, but...

babymamanumber2xx · 07/08/2024 10:20

Absolutely.

Wilby - people will think it's Wiloughby which would get annoying having to correct them? And he'd end up being called Will anyway so not v unique?

Varley - again people would assume it's Farley on first hearing?

MistyHazelFox · 07/08/2024 10:28

What about Valerian nn Valey? I prefer Varley Roscoe out of your options, but only like Roscoe out of for names you listed.

RedOnyx · 07/08/2024 10:32

Out of the options Varley Roscoe sounds best with Roscoe but honestly I'm not even sure either of the two are actually names. I would assume Wilby was short for Wilbur if I heard someone shouting it at the park.

BoleynMemories13 · 07/08/2024 10:49

It's not my style, but I think Roscoe is much better than your other two options.

Wilbur is ok, Wilby is far too nicknamey and also effeminate.

Varley sounds made up to me, will always be mistaken for Harley I think.

ShowOfHands · 07/08/2024 10:52

Together they make me think of the awesome folk singer Will Varley.

Wilby isn't a name and Varley is a surname.

Roscoe is a great name.

Waterboatlass · 07/08/2024 10:56

None of them are great OP, in my opinion. Rue means regret or sorrow. Rufus?

Would you or your husband want to be called Wilby? It's silly. Keep this one for a retriever. Your son will be grateful. William, Wilbur?

Varley and Roscoe fine if you love them (although random surnames not to my taste) but it does look a bit as though you've reached the end of the phone book and are getting tired of looking.

Roscoe probably the best of the lot

Any other options?

Waterboatlass · 07/08/2024 10:59

Wilby, Roscoe and Varley all perfectly fine surnames btw, no offence to anyone!! I mean surnames don't always work as given names. Mine absolutely wouldn't

Riqwihr · 07/08/2024 11:00

I don't like either. Varley suggests 'varlet' (knave or servant) and Wilby sounds like an unfortunate combination of 'willy' and 'wibbly'. I know it's a surname, but I don't think it works well as a first name.

Izzynohopanda · 07/08/2024 11:00

Wilby, as a nn, short for Wilfred, Willoughby, William, Wilberforce, Wilbur

Varley - don’t like this, unless also a nn (not sure what for).

Izzynohopanda · 07/08/2024 11:01

Work in a clinical environment. Commented to someone recently that Roo is becoming the new Teddy, as seen a few recently, either as Roo or Roux (female?).

Newuser75 · 07/08/2024 11:02

I like Willy Rhe. I think it's a lovely name.

Newuser75 · 07/08/2024 11:03

Newuser75 · 07/08/2024 11:02

I like Willy Rhe. I think it's a lovely name.

Wilby Rue. Sorry.

Useruserdoubleuser · 07/08/2024 11:05

Definitely not Wilby. So Varley then.
Middle names are irrelevant really but if Rue (sadness) has meaning for you I’d go with that.

olpo · 07/08/2024 11:25

Why not simply call him John or Daniel? Or Will/William. James, maybe.

Something like that. Just a normal, unpretentious name.

Then he can demonstrate his individuality and unique style though his behaviour and demeanour.

raspberryberet7 · 07/08/2024 11:28

Roscoe rue is the best option out of all your names imo

Moreteaandchocolate · 07/08/2024 12:01

Varley Roscoe is the best of the options you’re considering. I much prefer Roscoe Varley though, if you’d consider switching the name order?

Waterboatlass · 07/08/2024 12:25

Useruserdoubleuser · 07/08/2024 11:05

Definitely not Wilby. So Varley then.
Middle names are irrelevant really but if Rue (sadness) has meaning for you I’d go with that.

But it's not sadness as in Dolores, it's more bitter remorse, as though he's done something wrong.

MerryMarys · 07/08/2024 13:18

Why not simply call him John or Daniel?

Maybe because the op doesn't like them? I know soo many Johns and Dans that I too find them overused and dull.

wandawaves · 07/08/2024 13:21

Neither. Awful names.

TomatoSandwiches · 07/08/2024 13:37

I'm not a fan of any of those names.

Rue is not a nice nickname even with the sentiment and like a pp mentioned, is becoming more popular as a filler name like Mae/May/Mai for girl.

Varley sounds like Valet to me or will be mistakenly called Marley forever.

Roscoe sound like an American cop TV show character.

Wilby is very cutesy for a boy, will never be called that once at school and just use Will as a nn.

I love Wilberforce, Rupert, Rufus.
Wilbur is ok.

I'm not a fan of naming children with double initials, like Jack Jones or Adam Albright either.

If you put a gun to my head I'd go with,

Benedict (Ben for Rueben ) Roscoe Surname.

Barleysugar86 · 07/08/2024 13:43

Wilbur Roscue with Wilby as a nickname works well.

Treesnbirds · 07/08/2024 13:49

Varley Reuben maybe?
