heeeeeelp! (Please) having trouble picking a boy name- going back and fourth. I love both so much. Just want other opinions on what they prefer. If you don’t like any that’s fine too😂

I feel like they both give off a different vibe. And FYI my other children have old names.

So we have
Wilby ⚡️
or
Varley⚡️

we would like the middle name to be either roscoe or rue .

rue- because we lost a baby boy Ruben.
roscoe has no meaning we just like it.

let me know what you think.

thanks all! :)

Sorry but not very keen on either but would go with Wilby (Wilber would be better with Wilby as a nickname)
Varley will get "Marley?" every time he tells someone his name

Elyalbert · 07/08/2024 13:52

Willoughby is a great name and you can shorten it to Wilby.
Willoughby Roscoe - I like it.

murasaki · 07/08/2024 13:52

Poor kid. Or he would be if he were real.

KirstenBlest · 07/08/2024 13:54

Sorry for your loss.

Wilby or Varley. Of the two, Wilby but it looks a bit too much like Willy. They're not great. Both seem like surnames. Varley seems nothingy. Charlie is better.

Rue means Regret
Roscoe - makes me think of Tesco and Costco. Ross is nice.

shoopshoopdedoo · 07/08/2024 14:14

None of them are to my taste, but I think Roscoe Rue is probably the best combo.

AdviceNeeded2024 · 07/08/2024 14:23

Any reason why you’ve picked Wilby and Varley? Are you connected to them or do you just want something no one else has?

I really don’t like either, Varley is particularly awful for a first name. Sounds like Harley or Charlie, I think people would constantly think they had misheard.

There must be better unusual names you could consider?

I agree with this if it’s got to be 2 out of the 4

But it's not sadness as in Dolores, it's more bitter remorse, as though he's done something wrong.

Indeed. "Rue" means to bitterly regret something.

As in: "I rue the day that..."

Whatthefuck3456 · 07/08/2024 14:52

Barley rue 100%

MerryMarys · 07/08/2024 13:18

Why not simply call him John or Daniel?

Maybe because the op doesn't like them? I know soo many Johns and Dans that I too find them overused and dull.

Going by the whimsical fairytale names Mumsnet barfs up every week, he'll be really quite unusual as a bog-standard John or Daniel.

I am willing to bet that the average bloke would rather have a boring sensible name than a hippy, faux-posh or wanky name.

Firsttimebabymummy · 07/08/2024 15:44

None are to my taste.

Willoughby Ross is my suggestion

Tikk · 07/08/2024 18:24

Crikey they're a bit much for me but I'd go for Roscoe if I had a gun at my head.

Would your DH like to introduce himself as Wilby or Varley in a room of people?

Or Willoughby?!

WrongSortOfPoster · 07/08/2024 18:30

Willoughby makes me think of Wallaby.

How about Philby or Farley?

Hate them both sorry! They're both surnames named for places not actual given names

GoodnightJude1 · 07/08/2024 18:34

I love the name Wilby! I first heard it when I started following parttimeworkingmummy on Instagram.

Go with whatever you love. When I chose my DS name everyone hated it but i didn’t care, I loved it. Now everyone comments on what a ‘lovely name’ it is!

ThePoshUns · 08/08/2024 07:25

Both awful, sound like the names of caravan manufacturers

UltramarineViolet · 08/08/2024 07:34

I don't particularly like either but out of the 2 options I prefer Varley by a long way

How about Varley Rueben?

I hope your surname is not one that could be mistaken for a first name - eg. James, Elliot, Oliver etc? If it is you will get lots of people getting mixed up and calling your son James Varley rather than Varley James

itsgettingweird · 08/08/2024 08:06

raspberryberet7 · 07/08/2024 11:28

Roscoe rue is the best option out of all your names imo

My thoughts too

Willoughby makes me think of Wallaby.

How about Philby or Farley?

Sorry but those are possibly the worst sounding two names I've seen on here, plus Wilby. Normal surnames, ugly first names. Varley is borderline.

I don't love Roscoe personally but it's fine

Willoughby or Wilberforce. Are we naming Bassett hounds now?

Come on, this is for a human being!

Not Rue. The meaning isn't good.

William, Vernon, Vincent, Jago (Roscoe is Cornish), Rudy, Rufus, Harley, Rory, Wilfred, Wulfric,

Kitjo · 08/08/2024 08:39

Definitely Roscoe - nn Ross - very different and best choice here 👍

carrotsfortea · 08/08/2024 11:26

Not keen on Roscoe. I like Wilbur and Rue. I don't love Varley.

If your other kids have old names, would Wilbur work? Wilby sounds like a pet name for a very young child or for very close relatives. Would that work as a shortening? Wilbur gives the choice of more or less conventional nicknames like Will when he is older too.

user1492757084 · 08/08/2024 11:34

Neither is attractive, sorry.

How about ..
William Ross
Ross Willoughby
Wilbur Ruban
Roland Bourke - letters of Ruban are included in name

They won't though. They will be fitting in with the other kids with "hippy" names. Times change.
