What boy name do you like best? Can’t pick out of two.

heeeeeelp! (Please) having trouble picking a boy name- going back and fourth. I love both so much. Just want other opinions on what they prefer. If you don’t like any that’s fine too😂

I feel like they both give off a different vibe. And FYI my other children have old names.

So we have
Wilby ⚡️
or
Varley⚡️

we would like the middle name to be either roscoe or rue .

rue- because we lost a baby boy Ruben.
roscoe has no meaning we just like it.

let me know what you think.

thanks all! :)

I don't think your child should have a name related to his deceased sibling. He's not a replacement. I think you should let him have his own identity.

I really like Roscoe as a first name. Not a fane of Wilby or Varley.

Oceangreyscale · 08/08/2024 12:05

Varley, or Roscoe.

There's a clothing brand Varley but I think that's fine.

TheWebsFromAllTheSpiders · 08/08/2024 12:06

Wilby Rue.

You / he can always shorten it to Will

BiggieLittle · 08/08/2024 12:09

I like unusual names but not keen on any of your suggestions.
Roscoe is the best so I would use that as a first name.

Varley reminds me of farleys rusks that baby’s have. Just don’t like the sound of the names

ComealongMartha · 08/08/2024 12:14

Wilby Rue.

I would go for Wilfred or Wilbur with Wilby as a nickname but I’m not you so go for Wilby!

Shitlord · 08/08/2024 12:16

Your child will not thank you for calling him bloody Wilby. Cop onto yourself.

usernother · 08/08/2024 12:17

Neither. Wilby reminds me of Holly Willoughby and Varley sounds very like Barley. Both sound like surnames.

Gooseysgirl · 08/08/2024 12:21

Sorry neither of them appeal to me. If I had to choose, would go with Wilby. I prefer Roscoe, Ross for short.

ineedtogwtoutbeforeitatoohot · 08/08/2024 12:33

Neither

SabrinaThwaite · 08/08/2024 12:44

Rue (as a herb) is bitter in taste, and means repentance or regret as well as sorrow (I remember Hamlet all too well).

So I’d go for Roscoe out of the two.

Wilby and Varley - just no.

viques · 08/08/2024 12:55

What do you mean your other children have “old” names? You mean proper, identifiable names? Why are you being so mean to little Wilby Varley Rue ?Give him the dignity and gift of having a proper name that he won’t have to spell out to everyone he meets, that you won’t have to see mis spelled on every present, birthday or Christmas card, piece of creative art or certificate from Nursery or school.

William is a lovely name , Rupert if you want to remember your little Reuben, Evan is a better mix up of most of the letters than Varley.

OlympicsFanGirl · 08/08/2024 13:08

I think they are awful sorry

tsmainsqueeze · 08/08/2024 13:15

Ok for golden retrievers .

Butwhybecause · 08/08/2024 13:15

Would you or your husband want to be called Wilby? It's silly. Keep this one for a retriever. 😁

I don't like any of them, sorry.

I don't believe in giving children names that have to be constantly explained to others. Wilby? Do you mean Willoughby?
Rue? Kangaroo?
Roscoe, can't think what it reminds me of but no, it's a surname. Lewis Hamilton's dog is called Roscoe.

What is a Roscoe in slang?
a revolver or pistol

Hope you have a rethink for the sake of your child.

Bournetilly · 08/08/2024 13:17

I prefer Wilby out of the 2, not that keen on either.

I would use Rue as his middle name because of the meaning. Also prefer the name Rue.

YellowRoom · 08/08/2024 13:18

Willby makes me think Will Be or Wibbly.

NewGreenDuck · 08/08/2024 13:23

All totally awful. You might be better giving the names to the Labrador. Or yourself and see reactions.

Pippatpip · 08/08/2024 13:48

Wilby is very similar to a Caravan manufacturer. Also small boys will call him Willy and snigger a lot when they are four to about nine. Also sounds like will he? Varley will be heard as Farley. As someone with a surname beginning with V, I spent my life spelling it out to people who all think it starts with a F even when the V is over hardened in pronunciation. I think Roscoe is tolerable. Don't call him Rue. It is the name of a herb and means regret as in 'you'll rue the day' and given the connotations associated with your loss, I think it close to the bone. What about Willoughby (more of a prounciation of the low sound) and more commutable to Will rather than Willy. Ssound rather posh and he can chose when older to be the full name or just Will. Willoughby Roscoe Surname sounds rather like a distinguished WW2 fighter pilot or a 1930s cricketer.

loropianalover · 08/08/2024 13:52

OP they are all awful. There’s not a single name you’ve listed that I’d want to stand up and introduce myself as in my first graduate job as a young male. Wilby is particularly awful. Maybe it’s my accent but Varley doesn’t roll off the tongue easily, Roscoe and Rue are animal names.

DiscoBeat · 08/08/2024 13:55

I'd go William (nn Wilby and lots of other options of dimunitives for him to choose from later).
So William Ru

Sandyankles · 08/08/2024 14:00

All awful. Wilby is particularly awful - feeble and silly sounding. Too much scope for Willy, Wimpy etc nicknames.

I also think having the name of your little Reuben might be a bit of a burden for him - better to let him have his own name and remember his brother in a different way.

kfellover · 08/08/2024 14:03

I think a longer name on the BC such as William nn Wilby would be better. But I think I do prefer Varley.

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 08/08/2024 14:19

Hate them all.

ElspethofEcclefechan · 08/08/2024 19:30

Roscoe

Wilby short for Wilbur would also be nice, but I'm not keen on it as a name on its own.

Varley sounds like Harley but yooneek. Not my bag at all.

Wilbur Roscoe would get my vote.
