We are fairly set on Nehemiah for baby boy (nn Neo) and are looking for a middle name. Open to any and all suggestions please!

Nehemiah Jude

I think Nehemiah Obadiah has a real ring to it. It sounds like you’re rapping. I would want to say that name over and over. It’s fabulous.

Nehemiah is not as unusual name as everyone is making out. It's a great name! At first I thought the people asking for pronunciation were being facetious as it's so familiar to me. It's common in Nigeria and the Caribbean.

I think like everyone, Nehemiah John or Nehemiah Paul or Nehemiah Samuel would work nicely.

Mycatsmudge · 31/07/2024 08:06

So pronunciation is nee·uh·mai·uh (like Jeremiah at the end).

I do think a one syllable biblical name like John, Mark, Luke or Paul would work best. The most you’d want would be a 2 syllable middle name like Caleb or Issac

KirstenBlest · 31/07/2024 09:15

@Commonsense22 , the pronunciation of biblical names tends to vary from country to country. I've only heard it as Neh-heh-mee-ah, but that has been in the context of the (non-English) Bible. I'd guess that the UK English pronunciation is Nee-uh-my-ah, or maybe Neh-heh-my-ah.

That it is popular in Nigeria or the Caribbean has no effect on my familiarity with it.

Thanks everyone. Lots to think about! Our first son has two biblical names. A short 'prophet' 2 syllable name and a longer middle name. We had thought about effectively doing the opposite this time though not essential to be a biblical name!

I appreciate that the name isn't to everyone's taste, but it's well known in our area / community and will be pronounced etc easily 😊.

Neo (which is the Ancient Greek word for new and completely unrelated to Nehemiah) is a very odd shortening to choose for a Hebrew name.

I'm not set on the nickname to be honest and will probably use the full name myself, but his daddy likes to have nickname ideas ready to go! I'm certain something random will naturally evolve once he's here.

I mean, you don’t get Nehemiah without Ezra!

Unfortunately we know about 12 Ezra's under the age of 10 or this would be a no brainer!

This gave me a giggle! Unfortunately that's his brother's middle name!

@Teamustbefromateapot I hear ya. I don’t know if you’re religious or not, but as someone who is, the recent Ezra resurgence is very annoying! Thankfully my DS’s biblical name is still off people’s radar!

(obviously I know that religious people don’t own biblical names, just in case anyone wants to jump on me! Ezra is a free-for-all!)

KirstenBlest · 01/08/2024 19:02

I find the trend a little strange if you are not religious. I appreciate that names like Samuel, Daniel, Benjamin etc are always popular, but they don't seem the same.
Isn't Ezra popular because George Ezra made it seem more usual?

MyNewNewlife · 01/08/2024 19:04

Jacob

eggandonion · 01/08/2024 19:20

Where I live jeremiah is shortened to Miah. Just ny the way.

sausawyee · 01/08/2024 19:53

It's a Jewish name.

Wolfcub · 01/08/2024 19:54

I think that's a great name op. I think James or John go nicely

sausawyee · 02/08/2024 00:30

Boaz? 😂

HoHoHoliday · 02/08/2024 00:50

I've never heard the name but it sounds lovely!

Nehemiah Adam
or
Nehemiah Caleb

Theoldwoman · 02/08/2024 01:05

Nehemiah Kurt
Nehemiah Aaron
Nehemiah Jack

TMess · 02/08/2024 01:38

I love the name Nehemiah, I think a short one syllable middle name ie James is what works best. The ones I know go by Miah or Nehi (knee-eye). Neo immediately makes me think of neo-nazi but maybe that’s just me!

Soubriquet · 02/08/2024 03:56

Gosh. This name is in one of my fiction books as a girls name. Im not religious so it would never peg as a boys name to me
