OP posts:

With so many nice girls names, why give her a boys one?

I wen to school with a Peta ( Peter) and she hated it- thinking her parents wished for boy

JMSA · 28/07/2024 20:26

I know a lady named Tomi. She's Nigerian and it's short for Tomiwa (I think that's how you spell it).
She's a lovely person, so for me it has positive associations! And it's cute, I think.

StSwithinsDay · 28/07/2024 20:27

No. I have an uncle Tommy and a cousin Tommy. It's absolutely a man's name.

SparrowNest15 · 28/07/2024 20:29

I know a girl called Tobi and another called Jamie . What about Toni ( Antonia ) .

BESTAUNTB · 28/07/2024 20:30

I assumed it was pronounced Towmi not like Tommy …. so to rhyme with Toni as mentioned upthread

Jellytotsandwinegums · 28/07/2024 20:31

She'll spend her life correcting the spelling- if you need to call her Tomi, you need to spell it the usual way.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 28/07/2024 20:31

I also know a Nigerian Tomi

wafflesmgee · 28/07/2024 20:32

No.

RosieFlamingo · 28/07/2024 20:32

I know a Toma, she's Latvian and I quite like it.

Gamergirl86 · 29/07/2024 07:10

I like the name Thomasina for a girl, with the nickname Tommy. She'll grow into whatever name you give her.

Charlotte's have been called Charlie for years and years I don't see why other traditional boys names shouldn't be used for girls too.

I think Tomi is cute.

user1492757084 · 29/07/2024 08:03

As a nick name for Thomasina.

Toasticles · 29/07/2024 08:05

I also know a Tomi, Nigerian female, short for Oluwatomi iirc.

Bbq1 · 29/07/2024 08:42

She'll spend her life saying, "No, it's Tomi not Toni".

TheShiningCarpet · 29/07/2024 08:43

Awful

JimNast · 29/07/2024 09:38

Is it Toe-mi or Tommi? Tamsin and Thomasina are nice. Tammy is better than Tommi for a girl.

iwasashowgirl · 29/07/2024 09:48

Def not.

I always wonder if girls given what are in reality boys’ names feel like they disappointed their parents by being a girl!

Maelil01 · 29/07/2024 09:49

It looks like you can’t spell and you’ve named your child after a toy manufacturer.

loropianalover · 29/07/2024 09:49

She’ll always be called Toni which is horrible.

pimmpomm · 29/07/2024 09:53

I think we need some more info about you and why you like this name OP. And the pronunciation. As clearly, looking at these comments already, there's some ignorance around people from other countries and cultures who choose non English names.

It's well known in Japan, Finland and Nigeria.
I like it.

TheShiningCarpet · 29/07/2024 09:57

Just because one doesn’t like a name it doesn’t mean one is ignorant

context is everything

CurlewKate · 29/07/2024 09:58

So long as you have a boy called Chloe....

Gcsunnyside23 · 29/07/2024 10:01

How is it supposed to be pronounced? I didn't read as Tommy but toe-me (as is Toni) then realised you might mean Tommy.

Its well known in Finland for sure, but for boys.

Moreteaandchocolate · 29/07/2024 10:48
