Boy name list - what do you think?

We've got a long shortlist, sort of. I'm hoping one of these really grows on me because we can't seem to find any we both love and can use! DS will take both our surnames and one is quite long, so we're after a shortish name. Avoiding V names, B names for alliterative madness, and anything ending in 'orin.' Also a bit wary of anything too surname-sounding because he'll have enough of those!

Iven
Iver
Levin (Lev)
Linus
Lowen
Rohmer
Liev (Lee-ev, like Liev Schreiber)
Asa
Innes / Ennis
Ellis
Keir (probs not though thanks to Starmer🙄)
Rowe
Eugene (Gene)
Aneurin (exception to the 'rin' rule)
Orson
Silas
Lincoln (love Linc as a nn)
Irvin
Oren (Ren)
Ernest

What do you think? Middle name James or August (for my late dad) possibly, if either fits.

V names we like but can't use: Virgil, Vaughan. Otto is okay, but can't use it or Otis either. Ditto 'Eli' or 'Elias.' We're surrounded by boys, so it rules out a LOT. Even if we wanted a more traditional name! 😩

Go with Iver middle name Heath, unless you are a card-carrying socialist, in which case go for Keir Aneurin

SaveMeASeatOnTheBusToHell · 18/07/2024 17:26

Innes
Or Osian ?

StormingNorman · 18/07/2024 17:26

Xavier August

BobbyBiscuits · 18/07/2024 17:30

I like Anuerin. But it would get mispronounced.
I like Ivan, with an A spelling.
I like Oren, but again I prefer the spelling Orin.
What about Oisin, Ivo, Morten? I also like Ruan. Not sure if those are similar to your likes though?

TheCultureHusks · 18/07/2024 17:36

That is a really weird list - like lots of attempted variations on the same sound 😵‍💫

And if you can’t have anything ending ‘orin’- how come you’ve got Oren in there as an actual name?!! (I don’t know if it is a name, it’s Welsh for ‘orange’ if that helps 😬)

How about Leo? You clearly like L, it’s short, has the feel of many of your names, elegant, easy to spell etc.

It looks more like a brain dump than a shortlist.

TomatoSandwiches · 18/07/2024 18:54

Igor
Viggo
Van
Lars
Guy or Gus
Clark
Gabe
Max
Fox
Tom
Kit

TrustPenguins · 18/07/2024 18:57

Love Linus, Silas, Ellis and Lincoln!

Calliopespa · 18/07/2024 19:03

I’m afraid I agree it’s a weird list - especially as they are all really quite surname-ish and you particularly wanted to avoid that 🤷🏻‍♀️

I quite like Innes or Silas, but also like the suggestions of Ivo and Leo. ( prefer them to be honest). My favourites if the names you mentioned were James and August. Couldn’t you use them as first names? They go well together.

TheCultureHusks · 18/07/2024 19:54

Leo James is lovely

BobbyBiscuits · 18/07/2024 20:18

I thought he might have red hair in the family, hence Orin. That's why I went for Ruan which means red.
Corin? I like the male form of the name, though obviously Corrine as the feminine is more common.

FayCarew · 18/07/2024 20:39

Every other Leo will be Leo James.

Ihavenoclu · 18/07/2024 20:43

The only one I like on the list is Lincoln

NewName24 · 18/07/2024 20:48

Really don't like any of the names.

Earnest fits with the 'old man name' fashion over recent years (Reggie, Arthur, Stanley, Alfred). I met a baby Ernie recently and it did make me smile, if I'm honest.

BingoMarieHeeler · 18/07/2024 20:51

You’re discounting -orin endings (can only think of Torin!) but Oren is ok? 🤔

I would choose Oren, Lincoln or Asa personally :)

Izzynohopanda · 18/07/2024 20:52

Iven - not keen
Iver - prefer Ivor
Levin (Lev) - not keen
Linus - quite like
Lowen - not heard of before, will people mishear as Rowan
Rohmer - no, never heard of before
Liev (Lee-ev, like Liev Schreiber) - no
Asa - no
Innes / Ennis - like
Ellis - like
Keir (probs not though thanks to Starmer🙄) - like
Rowe - no
Eugene (Gene) - ok
Aneurin (exception to the 'rin' rule) - like,
Orson - like
Silas - like
Lincoln (love Linc as a nn) - like
Irvin - no
Oren (Ren) - not sure
Ernest - like

Firsttimebabymummy · 18/07/2024 20:54

Sorry I don't like any on your list tbh..

Ivor James perhaps!

Not on your list but suggested above- Leo James.. that's lovely :)

deliwoman1 · 18/07/2024 20:59

Not keen on Ivo for some reason. Like I names but I’m not keen on most names ending in O, not sure why!

There are three Leos in our DDs nursery room! It’s not a bad name at all but it’s just so popular round our way. I also lived with one once and he was horrible, so nope. James only as a middle because it’s elegant but boring.

We don’t want anything to rhyme with Corrine specifically. Oren doesn’t and we’d shorten to Ren probably.

August is nice and it means something to us, but we’d definitely shorten it to Gus rather than Augie, and Gus is DP’s occasional nickname! So it’s put us off being a first name.

I guess we do like similar sounding names but it has to do with the combo of our surnames really. I also do like surname-sounding names which is definitely why they’ve crept in despite needing to keep them out! These ones aren’t too bad with our surnames. Morten is cool but I’m not sure it works with our surnames 😞

August is really nice! As is Gus.

ALittleRusty · 18/07/2024 21:20

From your list I like Asa and Rowe.
Paired with James as a middle name you could use AJ/RJ as nn.

I know one Asa who is mid-40s, he's often called Ace which I quite like.

I’m not sure then as sorry I don’t like any of the others.

Silas is nice

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 18/07/2024 22:31

Providing you have no plans to move to Wales, sweet and simple Oren is gorgeous, no idea why it’s not more widely used (although I suppose it might get misspelt as Orin).

Asa is equally lovely and such a cool palindrome name for boys. Lev (on its own) is pretty cool too.

Aneurin and Lowen are also beautiful (although I might assume Welsh/ Cornish links as I think they aren’t well used outside those areas).

Dislike the others, sorry, most are either too surname for me (Lincoln, Rowe et al) or a bit too retro hipster (Ernest, Orson, maybe even Silas) or horribly nerdy sounding (Eugene especially, but also Irvin, Ennis, Linus).
