DH and I like classic names but we're struggling to find one we both like.

The below are what we have on our list at the moment:

Alfred
Arthur
Hugh
Emrys

What do you think of these 4, and what could we add to our list?

Other names we like but can't use, for various reasons:

James
Alexander
Thomas
George

I love Arthur too.

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 10/07/2024 18:49

In Mansfield Park the young gentlemen were called Edmund and Thomas, but in Narnia it was Edmund and Peter.
I work in a school and we have no Peters and only a few Tommys so either for rarity.

DoublePeonies · 10/07/2024 19:00

Lots of lovely ideas.
Alistair was on my short list (Along with Edmund, and several already mentioned).

EdithStourton · 10/07/2024 19:56

Depends if you want to stick with the Old English saints theme:
Edgar
Swithin
Oswald
Cuthbert
Or the British saints in general theme:
Julian
Theodore
Lawrence
Or not....

I came here just to find Baldrick. Or Percy. Actually, Bernard.

Uricon2 · 10/07/2024 20:09

How about Cassian? Unusual without being bizarre. Helped by the only one I've ever known being both cool and nice!

My adored grandfather was an 1890s Alfred and it is a great name, but like some of the others once the current cycle finishes it will revert to being Old Man, like (again sadly) Wilfred.

BTW, Edmund is lovely.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 10/07/2024 21:10

Hugh is stunning and works very well with Edmund imo, both are traditional names that are currently underused.

I like Alfred very much too as another slightly retro beauty and it would be my close second choice, but it is much more popular - and trendy Arthur even more so. Because they are so popular I’d possibly expect them to be in a sibset with something like Edward instead of Edmund which is so much rarer. You might like Wilfred as another to consider too? (although even that’s rising in popularity)

Emrys is gorgeous - but again I feel it’s not the best match to Edmund if that matters. The Emrys I know have brothers Ioan, Owain etc - it feels very Welsh to me.
