Aurelia and Arielle

Two very different names I know.

What are your thoughts on Aurelia and Arielle?

Ariel is biblical but unisex. And likelihood is it would be pronounced Air-ee-el like the washing liquid. Ari-el looks and sounds more feminine. Also easier for people to know how to say it.

Aurelia. Would it be mis pronounced? There's two ways of saying it Au-ray-lia and au-ree-lia. Which is the most common? How likely is it to be shortened?

Thank you.

Ariel - the little mermaid.

Aurelia is a nice name though

FayCarew · 09/07/2024 08:46

Aurelia. - Au-ray-lia and au-ree-lia. Which is the most common? She would get both, but she might get Ow-rail-y-a or Au-reel-ee-a too.

How likely is it to be shortened? Highly likely, I'd say.

I'm not keen on it or on Arielle. Both seem a bit frilly.

Firsttimebabymummy · 09/07/2024 09:08

I find them both frilly but prefer Arielle if i had to choose.

Nicebloomers · 09/07/2024 09:10

Aurelia is my preference.

TM1979 · 09/07/2024 09:14

Too frilly and complicated. If you are already struggling with pronunciation then why bother?

BigBoysDontCry · 09/07/2024 09:33

Areli? There's a tiktok guy (who is church going) whose daughter is called this. I presumed religious as his other child's name is biblical. Also know an Amaris with a similar background.

I find Aurelia a bit of a mouthful but both of your options are fine.

MysticCT · 09/07/2024 09:36

Both are nice names, I also like Ariella.

MadKittenWoman · 09/07/2024 09:57

Via Aurelia is the name of the coast road in my family's part of Italy. There it's pronounced ow (rhymes with cow) - RELL - ee- a

FayCarew · 09/07/2024 09:59

I think they are names that look prettier than they sound.
Arielle/Ariella split up into 'Arry Elle/Ella.

Ariela · 09/07/2024 10:03

I'm biased, but would suggest Ariela or Ariella!

DearOccupant · 09/07/2024 10:21

My daughter has an Ariella in her class, she gets called Ari. So check you are happy with that if you go with Arielle. I personally prefer Aurelia (Au-ray-lia).

NCfor24 · 09/07/2024 19:30

I like Aurelia which I'd pronounce Aw-rell-ia
I don't like Arielle at all.

CommeUneVacheEspagnole · 09/07/2024 19:33

What about Aurelie? Could be teased as orally tho.

Arielle is nice but is to girls names what Casper is to boys names.

Aurelia is perfect. And every Christmas she will get a mention in love actually. (I think it's the character that Colin firth falls in love with that can't speak English.)

Teamarugula · 09/07/2024 19:34

I don’t think Ariel is unisex - it’s literally a Disney princess name. I prefer Aurelia though. I’d pronounce it or-ray-lee-uh. I don’t think it has a particularly natural shortening that means it’s destined to be shortened, but there are things you could make out of it (eg Lia or maybe Rory)

Heavenlyhoumous · 09/07/2024 19:49

Love Ariel, Ariella and Ari as a nickname. I think they re easier to pronounce than Aurelia. Is Ariel a character in Shakespeare as well as little mermaid? I might be wrong been a long time since school. I knew an Ariel who was Israeli, beautiful and said it is a popular Hebrew name.

RhetoricalRectangle · 09/07/2024 19:49

We very almost called DD2 Aurelia but didn't at the last minute as I was pronouncing it the Portuguese way (Ow-Rell-Ee-A) and my DH was saying (Or-Ayl-Ee-A) and it irritated me!

Arielle is very pretty.

Aurelie is also lovely and I think French names are having a real renaissance with UK baby girls.

Mugcake · 09/07/2024 20:21

They're both super pretty names! I know an aurelia and it's pronounced au-ray-lia and it doesn't get shortened

Clearinguptheclutter · 09/07/2024 20:24

I like both
however your pronunciation is wrong
or-ELL-i-a. Though some will say or-EE-lli-a

Ariella is nice too

FayCarew · 09/07/2024 20:42

dollopz · 10/07/2024 21:46

I hopped on to suggest Areli! Also inspired by the tik toker. It's a lovely name.
